Blog entries and static content on home page

Recommended Posts

jlapides2

Hello: I would like to have introductory text AND blog entries on my home page. I have tried setting up a static page plus a blog and selecting them in settings/readings under the two drop-downs under static page. Is there a way to have them both together? I am using the free version of PageLines but would buy it if I can get a few simple things to work. Thanks, Jeff Lapides boomonchronicles.com

You should just the full-width sidebar widget and place it only on your blog pages.

Adam: Are you talking about the PageLines Section control? If you are I tried hiding the sidebars for the home page and leaving them in for the the blog page. Nothing happened. Otherwise, I don't understand what you are suggesting. My goal is on the home page to say something about the site and also show the chronology of blog posts. Can I do that? Heff

By setting the full-width sidebar widget to only blog pages, you can place the introductory text inside and have it only display in the blog post page (where the entries are displayed).

Please read the docs before posting. Please do not private message me unless I ask you to.

Hi: I'm sorry you're skipping too many steps for me. I'm using the free version. I cannot find a full-width sidebar widget. The only sidebar options that I see are page edit screen. How should the settings/reading options be set? Should I have a static page option selected with the the posts page set to the dummy blog page? That's what I am trying but it ignores any text I enter and just shows the blogs entries. Jeff

He's talking about the Template Setup tab. Put your intro message as a text widget into the full width sidebar in Appearance > Widgets. Then you drag the full width sidebar to the active side in Template Setup for post pages. I don't know how much of this is part of the free version.

Tim: Thanks but I don't think there is full width sidebar in the free version. All that I see are containers for: primary, secondary, tertiary, content and footer sidebars. So I still need to figure out if this theme will work. Can't keep buying themes to see if they work. Jeff

Out of that list, you can still do it with the "content" sidebar.

Tim: I tried that and it still does not work. Can anyone tell me how Settings/Readings/Frontpage-display is supposed to be set. Are there any other required settings? Thanks, Jeff

I'm not sure why you keep mentioning the reading settings. Those settings are unrelated to what you're trying to do, and they should be kept as default. Maybe you can re-word what you want so we have a better understanding.

Tim: I keep mentioning the Reading setting because I saw something in the documentation regarding static home pages. I am trying to create a home page that has some static content that remains fixed, i.e. a description of the site PLUS reverse chronological blog entries. Jeff

Yes, a static page in Readings would let you have a home page with static content. But what you want is to combine the static content with blog content, and the way to do that is not to "combine" static and post Reading settings. There's no such thing. We've told you how to accomplish this with wordpress. The universal sidebar (or in your case the content sidebar) gets put on your posts page in Template Setup, and that widget becomes your static content. Your Reading settings should be default based on your particular needs.
