celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 Hi guys, I've just created a 'thank you' page that new members will receive once they've subscribed to my blog via Aweber. Obviously, I don't want this page to be a parent page nor a sub page in any drop down menu. How can I create pages without revealing their existence in the menu section? Hope this makes sense. Thanks Celine :-)
Kate 3 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 Hi Celine, Using custom menus (Appearance->Menus) you can control what does and doesn't appear by "manually" placing the menu items in.
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 Hi Kate, Got it! Thanks for that. Celine :-)
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 Oh dear! This is not going as well as I thought. I have followed your instructions and my 'thank you' page still appears in the drop down menu. What to do? Celine :-)
cshoffmann 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 In Appearance>Menus click the thank you page arrow and then click remove. See screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/o8SPovxM1M
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 Hi Shaun, I've done that and still it shows up in the drop down menu. Any other ideas? Celine :-)
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 Another thing I've tried is to make the page 'private' but when I open up the 'Thank you' page, the word 'PRIVATE:' appears in bold by the page title - not good. But the good news is, when the page is 'private' it does disappear from the drop down menu. Celine :-)
cmunns 16 Report post Posted April 21, 2011 If you don't actually assign the menu you've created to a theme location on the left, then it is going to still use the default menu system.
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2011 If you don't actually assign the menu you've created to a theme location on the left, then it is going to still use the default menu system. Hi Adam, Please could you explain further? As far as I see, when you create a new page, it wants to be allocated somewhere. It either sits in the main parent line or appears where you parent it. I have no problem with giving it a parent but what I don't like is if it appears in the drop-down menu when you don't want it to. If you could maybe show in pictures what you mean and how to solve this issue, I would be grateful. Thanks Celine :-)
kastelic 6 Report post Posted April 22, 2011 What Adam means is that you need to activate the custom menu you created. Look at Shaun's screenshot. See where Primary Menu Navigation is set to "primary"? This is what you to set your own menu to, whatever you named it.
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 25, 2011 Hi guys, I've set up a primary menu to include my primary pages as instructed. As it stands I'm happy with the result. But now have no drop down menu option that will reveal any of my sub category pages. Does anyone know how I can create sub category pages that reveal ONLY those pages I want visitors to see? Thanks Celine :-)
Kate 3 Report post Posted April 25, 2011 Hi Celine, In order to create the drop-down, you have to indent the submenu items below the main menu item. Did you try that already?
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 26, 2011 Hi Kate, Thanks for your suggestion. As it stands, I am already doing that. Before having the problem I now face, I did have a lovely set of drop down menu options. For now, I do not because of the reasons I've already mentioned :-( I've been 'parenting' all my 'behind the scene' pages under the PRIMARY menu, then going and deleting them in MENU, as already instructed? Now that that's working fine could I re-open my drop down menu function to reveal only those pages I want my visitors to see? And if the answer is yes, how can I do that, as opening the drop down function in global changes, doesn't seem to be working anymore. I must be pressing the wrong buttons. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Celine :-)
Kate 3 Report post Posted April 26, 2011 Hi Celine, Is it possible to get a link to the site, please?

Kate 3 Report post Posted April 27, 2011 Okay... thanks for the link Celine. Just took a look. The sub menu items aren't actually being generated. Are you sure your custom menu is activated? Here's a quick test: View the home page in the browser. In a different tab/window, open the admin panel and try rearranging the menu items, then click "save". Go back to the page with your home page and click "refresh". Have the menu items moved? If not, then the issue may be the way you've setup the menus. Also, would it be possible to get a screenshot of your your Appearance->Menus screen, please?
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2011 Hi Kate, Yep, tried that. They moved a treat! Here's the screenshot you wanted: http://www.screencast.com/t/Je1lfVt5d Hope it helps. Look forward to hearing from you soon. Celine :-)
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2011 Hi Kate, By the way, I notice the stumbledupon logo is gone from my header. Did you do that? If so, big thanks! You saved me a bother. Celine :-))
Kate 3 Report post Posted April 28, 2011 Hey Celine, Nope, not me! Sorry For the ss: okay, I think we've found the problem See how all of the edges of the menu items meet up on the left side? The pages you want to be sub pages need to be indented underneath the parent. To do this, simply grab a menu item you want to be the "child", and drag it (slowly) to the right. It's new position will become "highlighted" with a dashed line. Repeat this for all of the subpages.
celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2011 Hi Kate, Should my menu look something like this? http://www.screencast.com/t/vwYaj2yEwOPA If this is the case, I can happily tell you I now have a lovely drop down menu - yeah! Thanks so much. Celine :-)
cshoffmann 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2011 Yes, it should look like that @celine. Now I have read this thread and I am wondering if you have gone to platform pro>settings>header and nav and then enable drop down menus. Have you done that? celinehoran 0 Report post Posted April 28, 2011 Hi Shaun, Thanks for your message and screenshot. Yep, I set that up ages ago. I can happily say this problem is resolved. Big thanks! Celine :-))
