I change my content width from 940px to 1100px That shouldn't cause a problem for anyone to see my site right? unless they have a prehistoric monitor..

It can, however you can use it, depends on your target audience.

So what would be the optimum width for the general public? Most professional blogs have it around 970-980 I noticed..

Hey Ben, If your target audience is 1024x768, then you shouldn't go any wider than 1000px, but 960-980 is a good range. Have you tried Googling screen resolution percentages?
