viveksweet 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2011 I just bought platform pro and am more than psyched with it! Platform base came with it as well and I understand that it is a child theme but I don't understand the difference? Any help?
Sourena 2 Report post Posted March 22, 2011 You should not touch any file in PlatformPro folder. Choose PlatformBase as your theme and customize it to your liking. That way if you upgrade PlatformPro you do not lose any of your changes to the theme. alefba.usWeb Development & Design for Right-to-Left languages
viveksweet 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2011 I installed them both and checked them out, they seem the same to me.. So I should activate platform base? I don't really understand... sorry.. Can you be more clear?
Sourena 2 Report post Posted March 23, 2011 Ok. Go to "Appearance > Themes" in the admin, and click on the word "activate" under the theme's image and description. alefba.usWeb Development & Design for Right-to-Left languages
viveksweet 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2011 lol, I know how to activate... was only a little confused how they work behind the scenes... I installed them both and activated the base one and that should be the one I will work on right. if an update comes out I update the other one, the pro.. correct? MrFent+ 28 Report post Posted March 23, 2011 The more you get into customizing your site, the more you will realize that you will need to learn how to use CSS. (cascade style sheets), since obviously there won't be a custom option for absolutely everything in Platform Pro. There is a section in the actual Platform theme to put custom CSS code, however, if you ever upgrade the theme to a newer version, the custom CSS code will be deleted. That is the reason for the Base child theme. You put the custom CSS code in the base theme, everything else it will work off of the parent Platform theme. From your word press menu, click on Appearance: Editor, select PlatformBase, and then Base.css. There you can put your custom CSS code and it will be preserved when you update. viveksweet 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2011 So, If there are any upgrades I should upgrade both? And when I upgrade I lose anything else than the custom CSS? Ben
kgstew 2 Report post Posted March 23, 2011 Hi Ben, When Platform Pro is updated you can update these core files. You will not need to update the base theme which will contain your custom CSS in the base.css file and any custom PHP you enter into the functions.php file. You will not lose any of this custom CSS or PHP if you add it to the base theme files. And yes you should activate the base theme once you have installed Platform Pro and Platform Base. Your changes will be made to the base theme. Cheers, -Kyle
viveksweet 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2011 Kyle, Right now I have added some things in the custom CSS area under custom code... So that won't stay when I upgrade the themes?
kgstew 2 Report post Posted March 23, 2011 Hi Ben, All of the settings inside of Platform are saved in the database so any changes you make to the customer code or to the framework settings will be saved when you update. Cheers, -Kyle
