Getting a 404 error on private pages that have links to them.

Greetings. I have created a custom menu on the primary sidebar. Some items of this menu contain pages that are currently private. I made these pages private to prevent them from showing in the main navigation tabs but i still want to allow access to them. However now that these items have been made private they are showing as 404 pages. Is there another way to make them public but not have them show up on the main navigation? patrick...

Absolutely, the proper fix here is to completely custom create your menu here only showing what you want: Appearance > Menus Thanks, Bryan

HI Bryan, thank you for your response. However I am not quite sure what you are referring to here. I have already created a custom menu for the items I do not wish to see on the main navigation area. 2things here: 1 In order to not show certain items on the main navigation area, I have made those pages private and placed them in the custom menu, The custom menu is on the primary side bar...however any items on that menu that were made private give a 404 page when followed...hence the problem. Is there another way make certain pages NOT show up on the main navigation bar without making them private???

Patrick I feel like you're circumnavigating. You've only created a custom menu to show private pages and you've only done that so those pages don't show on the main nav? Why don't you just create a custom menu for your main nav that excludes those pages. Also, for the 404: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/404-error-on-private-pages that might help?
