How to carry your theme localization into the current update?

Now that the localizing questions seems to be answered, I wonder, how you could retain your language edits (I use CodeStyling Localization) when you update to the current version of Platform--and don't have to worry about 'new' translations in those version, that you don't go with... Do we have to check localization files every time we update?

The localization string should remain the same, so no you wouldn't have to redo anything.

Well, I localized my site under 1.2 and found new and different translations after updating to 1.3. How come?

Well, can't recall the details, but: I left some of the terms un-translated, because it makes sense for me to read 'edit' for example, instead of 'Diese Seite bearbeiten' ??” it's shorter, and to some degree the english/american terms have kind of invaded german languages to a certain degree...
