The nextgen and flickrRSS plugins apparently don't enable pdfs (?) and I need to display pdf files so I opted for 'Post Featured Images.' I've successfully uploaded a pdf but the function is not what I need (click carousel button to open a box with a link to the pdf). If you don't want the thumbs to link to a posts page where the PDF if is described and showcased for download what could be a less painful route could be to use some fancy workaround trickery. Using this plugin: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/redirection/ You could create posts and add the PDF image thumb as the featured image just for the sake of setting up the carousel and appeasing it.
