assigning width to footer? can it be done?

I have a test site i am working on and i cannot get the footer to change from 100% width of screen to a fixed width of say 960px or 1000px to match the width of the body text. What do I need to do? Thx. http://singlegirlonabudget.com/wp/

The width of the footer is already set to 960px (the default). Do you want the black part to fit the width of the main content?

What layout mode are you in? You might want to try fixed width for your site, unless you need a custom background colour at the bottom.
