How do I rearrange order of pages/menu bar?

Recommended Posts

I would like to rearrange the order of my pages (across my menu). I thought indicating numbers in the ORDER field would do this, but nothing is happening whether there is a number there or not. (Same goes for reordering sub-pages) How do I do this?

You can do this very easily with a custom menu. Click on Appearance -> Menus and then make a new menu called "mymenu" or whatever. Check pages or categories that you want to add and click "add". Then you can drag and drop to reorder the pages, and drag them slightly to the right and below another menu item to make it a sub-menu. Finally make sure your new menu is checked under "primary menu". And your good to go!

Thanks Jimmy. I wasn't familiar with the Menu area, your steps work in creating a custom menu (or up to three it says) however I'm still not getting it. How can I have numerous menu's (across the bar on my homepage) with different sub-pages beneath these main menu pages. This area only allows me select one menu as "primary" and then only one will appear on the site. Sorry, I'm confused. Is there a simpler way to re-order the pages I created for this site? Wordpress places them in order as they are created (left to right, top to bottom on sub menus). How is the ORDER option properly used?

In

Appearance -> Menus

you can drag and drop the items to wherever you want. That way you can re-order them easily. If you mean how you can change their style (meaning organizing them in horizontal or vertical manner, or aligning them to the right or left then that can be achieved by changing the CSS. Would you explain more about what you mean by "re-order"?

The left-to-right and top-to-bottom order can be taken care of using the Custom Menus. Are the changes you make not appearing on your site?

I have a menu across the top of my site, some of these have drop menus from each link (page). Looking at them L to R, I would like to rearrange that order. For example: An "About Us" page is in the middle and I would like it on the far right hand side, last in order. Similarly, would like to reorder pages as they are Top to Bottom, in some drop menus from that main menu. Sourena - is this what you mean I would need to work in the CSS to correct?

Do you have the menu you made enabled as "primary menu?"

I did get that far Jimmy - and enabled the first menu as "primary menu." So I was able to see one link and drop menu. But the Appearance>Menu area said you can create up to three custom menus. I have more than three main menu links. That's where I abandoned that direction to solve moving them. Does anyone know how to correctly use the Page ORDER field? I used this to rearrange pages on other wordpress sites, I can't figure out why that way of rearranging page orders isn't working here...

Hi Amy -

But the Appearance>Menu area said you can create up to three custom menus. I have more than three main menu links.
What that means is there can be three menus, not three menu items. You can put as many menu items (theoretically) as you would like, all within the same menu. Hope that clears things up. In addition, please check out our documentation on the subject.
I can't figure out why that way of rearranging page orders isn't working here...
Do you mean you can't rearrange the page order via that field in general? Or, are you referring to rearranging the page order in the menu? If it's the latter, then that will actually be solved by correct usage of the menus, as noted above.
