emidzi 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2011 I am working in Platform Pro. I want the following headings on top of my blog: Blog, About, Contact, PR, Giveaways. I can achieve this. On my left side bar, I want different categories listed as: Exceedingly Elegant In: -Beauty -Fashion -The home -The kitchen -Children Faithfully Frugal In??¦ -Budgeting -Coupons -Online shopping I am putting tags and categories on my posts, but they are not showing up. Where should I look for this information? Thanks, Elizabeth I have tagged my posts in the category section and tag section as "beauty", etc.
Kate 3 Report post Posted February 2, 2011 Hi Elizabeth - What I would recommend: create two custom menus (under "Appearance->Menus") for each of the lists you have above. Then, for the links of each of those items, simply link to the corresponding tag. For instance: http://www.yoursite.com/tag/beauty/ Next, add two "Custom Menu" widgets to your sidebar, and select these two menus as the ones you want to display... (obviously one for each widget). If you need additional help with the process, you can refer to this video tutorial: http://www.pagelines.com/docs/menus-navigation You'll notice that video shows how to add categories to the nav. Follow this same process, only modify the link to be like the example I showed above, using "tags" instead of "category". Hope that helps!
emidzi 0 Report post Posted February 2, 2011 Kate, I did watch the video before posting. I not find the video helpful regarding my particular issue. It would be great if there was a second video that focused on my issue. That being said, I did start using "tags" instead of categories and it worked. However, when I click on "beauty" in the sidebar, I get a 404 error. Page.ly told me that my site wasn't "live" yet. (I am not really sure what this means.) Could this be the issue? Thank you so much! Elizabeth
Andrew 207 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 Yes, I'd say its something with Pagely. Not sure what's going on. But yes menus should be all you need for something like this.
bryan-hadaway 3 Report post Posted February 3, 2011 Let's get a link and check it out. Also, I suspect you might run into an issue where you need to show widgets from some pages and not others. For this you can use: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/widget-logic/ Thanks, Bryan
emidzi 0 Report post Posted February 4, 2011 Below is the link. I did install Widget Logic, but am unsure how to use it. http://superfrugalette.com/ Thank you for your help. Elizabeth
cmunns 16 Report post Posted February 4, 2011 So if you got one of those widgets to work then couldn't you duplicate that for the other widget?
emidzi 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2011 Adam, I do not understand your widget comment. I still have a linking problem. When the categories on the left, beauty, fashon, are clicked on, I would like the link to take someone to a page that has all of the posts tagged as "beauty", etc. Is this possible? catrina 103 Report post Posted February 6, 2011 It's possible as long as the link is correct. When I click on the "beauty" link (http://superfrugalette/tag/beauty), it is not going to the right page because there is no such page. Instead of using that link, you need to place "beauty" posts into their own category and put that category link in the widget. Please read the docs before posting. Please do not private message me unless I ask you to. Designer | Catrina Dulay Founder | Catrina and Mouse
emidzi 0 Report post Posted February 7, 2011 Catrina, After much trial and error, I figured out the steps: 1) Write a post 2) In the "category" section of the post, add "beauty" and check it 3) Go to Appearances > Menu 4) Create a Menu Name that says "Exceedingly Elegant In... 5) In Appearances > Menu check the category "beauty" and hit add. It will add to the menu and the link will work. My problem was that I had created a custom menu links instead of using categories. I thought that since I had created a custom menu widget, that I needed a custom menu link, not the case.
