Dreamweaver CS5 Wordpress Set-up/editing

Recommended Posts

Hello, Can someone with direct experience using DW CS5 editing for the WP site help me? I am not able to edit my site remotely like I was earlier. I am not able to see all the related css styles when I am using live view inspect mode. I do not know which WP file to open in DW to show me my home page. The index.php pages only provide the start-up code that tells WP to gather the content. Anyone know anything about this? I am completely stuck. I appreciate your help!

Hi Dustin, I don't know how common this is or if it's recommended. I personally wouldn't recommend it. Perhaps someone else can share. For now I'm going to mark for developer review. And if they can provide any insight into how it's possible or why it shouldn't be used. Thanks, Bryan

Thanks Bryan. I purchased CS5 specifically because it is marketed as having the capability to "visually edit" css. I found the Lynda.com CS5 & WordPress 3.0 video tutorial and successfully built a local site. However, when it came time to publish live I ran into WP install issues and I decided to scrap it and download WP with Simple Scripts on my Remote Server(BlueHost). When I established my new DW site, I successfully connected remotely to my new WP site and I even edited my PlatformPro theme! I changed the footer background and twitter for wordpress background and changed the padding in the header and changed the color of the background in the top-margin. You can check it out: http://www.5ing.us However, when I closed DW for the day and came back, I have not been able to fully utilize the DW Live View/Inspect mode tools because all of the css, which is dynamically-related to the other wp files, are not appearing on the pages that I'm trying to edit. Usually, you would open the index.php file to live view the home page on the site, but in this case, all you see is the php code that tells WP to gather all the file contents and to load the page(a server tech told me that). I have searched the DW forum & WP.org forum and sent out maydays and have not received any answers to what I'm experiencing and I would really like to get back to work! It appears that I have forged fairly new waters here considering that the DW tool is somewhat new and most existing theme designers are hand-code literate. I will be creating a tutorial when I found some solutions; so others will have more fluidity with their set up. Thanks for forwarding this on!

This just in from DW Forum. It's the most comprehensive understanding I've found! Hi Seems like you have a number of issues to contend with. Firstly, I would suggest the following: * WP needs to dynamically access all the various files that make up the WP site. It is not a traditional page based arrangement that you may be accustomed to in DW. There are many elements - or should I say, fragments of code that get assembled on-the-fly to produce a web page - all inside index.php. As a result, you will not see and traditional tags in the index.php file. They are all loaded dynamically. To see the site running in DW You need to run it in Live Mode, but you wont be able to edit the code without understanding where the fragments are that get dynamically assembled in the index.php file. * If you set up your site initially on a remote server then copy it down to your local server, the application will be wanting to access the database in order to run. If that database is not local, and you have not edited the wp-config file and database to accommodate the local server then you can expect problems. Same goes for transferring the site to a remote production server. The wp-config file and the db need to be edited so that he site will run as expected on the remote server It has been my experience to set up a local site for test and development and a seperate site in DW for the "production" site. That overcame some of the difficulties I experienced setting up a common DW site to run on both a local server and a remote server. Unfortunately, Adobe has not done a good job of educating the traditional DW user on what is needed to get familiar with using the product with web apps such as WP. Joomla or Drupal. It is a quantum leap from the old DW page based model to today's modern web apps. Wish I could be more helpful. Good luck !!" Does anyone know how to configure my .php files to do what this person suggests?

Jeff Lambert from WebPhysiology.com coached me through setting up DW with my WP site correctly. If you are starting from scratch and you have set up the localhost in DW and need assistance setting it up to your remote server, Jeff is an expert source and great to work with. Tell him Dustin sent you!
