Is there any way to insert html code into a feature box that gets a recent blog post with thumbnail?

Special Recent Posts allows you to include the thumbnail and offset, and pick posts by category. You can reuse the same basic shortcode on the same page, so that you can have multiple categories showing in separate boxes. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/special-recent-posts/
