Controlling Section Width

Recommended Posts

I am trying to create a stone simple design for a business website. Maximum 940px wide, shrinking and adjusting to smaller screen sizes appropriately. Simple colored background to fill the sides when the browser window is wider.

The header image is 940px width, looks right and shrinks as expected.

I cannot figure out how to get the body to line up with the header (never mind the menu for now, although it probably has the same problem.) For this example I placed the content and sidebar sections in a container. I thought I could set max width of the container at 940px and everything would work. No luck. The version shown is setting the container to 10 columns with 1 column offset. Obviously this won't agree with the header.

How can I set the body container to max width of 940px? Should I be taking a different approach altogether?

Set content width to 940px, then use an image section instead of a menu section maybe?

we don't many people doing it this way anymore...
