Creating a homepage

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm trying to create a home page for my site. I tried to look this up here - but am just getting a little confused. I also looked it up in documentation, but a comment below the video says it doesn't apply to Platform Pro. I don't want a static homepage. This is the only way I'm currently able to do it. - Go to Pages - Make a page named 'Home' - Click 'Hide content area' - Then when I click on the 'Home' menu link on my website, it takes me to http://buyitinbulk.com.au/home (actually, takes me to http://buyitinbulk.com.au/home-2 because I've fiddled about with the Home link a couple of times) Does this mean that essentially I'd have 2 homepages? (The one people land on when first coming to my site, and the one they land on when they later click the Home link) (Is it possible that in the future, Platform Pro can come with a HOME menu item preinstalled - and you create the elements for the homepage under the Site Header Template (since this has all the template options, and is the only template to have the site branding ? Or would this mess things up?) Thanks for advice!

The second home page you have is the one you created (there is no way of actually overwriting the original home page, so a "second" one is created), so in a sense, you do have two home pages. I don't think your suggestion of creating a preinstalled Home menu item would mess things up.

Taylor, Your official homepage is not a page, but your lists of posts. If you want a static homepage; then you are able to enable that option in WordPress. Can you clarify what you want done; I kinda don't understand what you need.

Thanks Catrina. It does seem weird to have this setup - 2 homepages. Thanks Myers - My post says that I don't want a static homepage - but is that the only option? No my home page is not a Wordpress Page - but what is there is the home page (in another sense) as that is the 'page' that shows to anyone clicking on my site. This is what i want: To have a home page that has this URL http:buyitinbulk.com.au - no matter whether someone has clicked on my website in a search engine query or has clicked on my 'home' link on my website. I don't want: http://buyitinbulk.com.au AND http://buyitinbulk.com.au/home to both be my 'home pages' I own lots of Wordpress sites and want to change them over to Platform Pro. None of them have 2 home pages. For example, this is one of my sites: http://herbusinesslife.com.au/'>http://herbusinesslife.com.au/ In the pages at the top, it has a home link that just goes to http://herbusinesslife.com.au/'>http://herbusinesslife.com.au/ and not http://herbusinesslife.com.au/'>http://herbusinesslife.com.au/home Is the following possible in the future (perhaps as an option?) (Is it possible that in the future, Platform Pro can come with a HOME menu item preinstalled - and you create the elements for the homepage under the Site Header Template (since this has all the template options, and is the only template to have the site branding ? Or would this mess things up?) I hope I explained myself properly!

You're not using WP3.0 menus are you? This is the best way to override any default actions to get what you want.

Hi Adam I experimented with the 3.0 menus a couple of days ago, but found that I could no longer have a drop-down primary menu when using them. The drop-down menu is not so important for the current site I'm working on, but very important for some of my other established sites - which thousands of site visitors use (the drop-downs) per month.

To get dropdowns with the 3.0 menus you have to drag and drop the actual items in the menu you created into a nested fashion. Give it a shot.
