Website problems caused by shared hosting?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm working on this website ; www.james-watling.com

And it keeps giving me problems, problems sometimes only viewable on my clients laptop, while it displays fine on mine.

Also some crossbrowser related issues.

- When I make changes (publish), it takes a very long time for the changes to be viewable on my client side.

- In Chrome the website is completely unviewable, with hanging sections & lag

- Safari has clipping problems

- Fonts are different in Firefox

Now my question is basically, if this is mainly code related or it might have to do with the shared hosting?

While I reversed checked the website and shows it has over 1000 sites on one server.

Could someone please take a look on their browser how it is displaying there? While I am going crazy, as well as my client.

Hope someone can help!

Hi,

If your clients site is on a server that is populated with over 1000 websites, then this is generally going to be cause of the issue. Shared hosting is cheap hosting and in hosting you most certainly get what you pay for. Therefore, if you're experiencing issues, then this likely the cause.

However, I have viewed your clients site on Chrome, Safari and FireFox and it displays the same on all browsers.

Hi Danny,

Thank you very much for the quick reply, really appriciate it!

Really strange that only my client is experiencing these problems.

There is some clipping in the navbar on safari, and the fonts display slightly different.

Is that also the case when you view it?

A "laggy website" (sections are slow loading and scrolling goes with a lot of efford) is basically to blaim on the hosting then?

Or are there other factors within DMS that could cause that problem?

Thanks a lot,

Colin

The fonts appear differently because you have wrapped them with a <b> tag. You shouldn't really be doing this and instead you should use CSS. So I would remove that and your fonts should look similar in all browsers.

The site is laggy, but this isn't a browser issue, it is related to the hosting. However, I do notice a loading scripting that isn't part of DMS when viewing on Safari. Therefore, this may be cause some conflicts, so I would remove.

Also, please be aware that we can not provide support to users who's issues are related to custom code they have added.

Hi

It loads pretty fast for me - within a few seconds. But the site does look a bit messed up as far as the menu system goes: http://screencast.com/t/k8vZbxpgFaJT

The issue with shared hosting isn't always true, it depends on who you use. The reverse look-up is also misleading because many cloud hosting systems have thousands of sites behind one IP but their load balancing gives everyone equal access.

Hi thanks a lot for all the feedback!

Still encountering problems though, the website looks perfect on my laptop, cross browser fonts displaying crisp and consistent, no lag, etcetera.

But on my client side, the website still looks like a few days ago, cross browser looks like different build, changes I made here are not showing up at all and he wants a refund.

Total headache, but I am sure its a hosting related problem?

Hope anyone can advise me on this, never had the problem before.

Hosted a video here on how I see the website at the moment:

Could someone please look if it is also like that on their browser, to make sure it's not a DMS related issue.

TIA!

I had a look on chrome and safari (mac) and it looks fine now. Only comment would be to add a margin to the left, the menu items are hard against the browser window.

I have no issues with the loading time based in London.

Shared hosting regardless of who you use, is a waste of money and isn't an ideal environment to host your website or a clients website.

@tjolin

What OS and what browser/version is your client using ? Also, the video on DropBox is no longer available.

Client went psycho and asked for a refund, so I did. Happy it's not my problem anymore haha.

Still a very strange issue though, it showed up fine in all browsers and cros-browser tests online.

He was using iOS macbook retina, but I think still with mavericks, shouldn't have been a problem though right?

Anyway, not really resolved, but the topic is resolved haha.

Thanks anyway (y)

Very odd. If they were on a MacBook Pro with retina, then they shouldn't have been problem. The only thing I can think of is that they may have changed their browser default type settings.

      Hi
      I have a map here http://www.iloveoffset.com/maps/
I want to add several pointer locations to the map, but when I do they do not appear.
On this map there are 2 pointer locations and as you can there is only one visible.
Earlier today I added 7 and could only see 4 so there is something odd going on.

      Hello,
I've been having trouble unlocking the template section for past couple of weeks. When I try clicking nothing happens.
I've deleted my custom css and removed plugins. Im down to having only the following plugins:
      Akismet
      Contact Form 7
      DMS Professional Tools
      Pagelines Updater
      WooCommerce
It was working fine before i have no idea what's going on with it.

My DMS 2 site http://www.heart-stone.com/ will not save any new custom css... I can still edit templates and publish those but any custom css that I enter never saves.
All WP files, themes, and plugins are up to date.
Any thought about what might be causing this?

Is there a way to edit the custom CSS via FTP? I know I can edit the custom code in the Chrome editor but is there a file path I can use to find and edit the CSS directly from our FTP?
Thanks in advance for the help!
