Forum Software 2015

Anyone using DMS and forum software?  Originally, we were going with bbpress but now client has decided maybe MyBB i the way to go.

From what I can find Mybb is often subject to hacking.   BBpress would be at least somewhat more protected because it's within WP.

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Jason,

I have used pretty much all the forum software you can imagine, bbPress, PhpBB, vBulletin, IPB, Vanilla, Xenforo and for me the best one is Xenforo. However, implementing Xenforo into a WordPress installation is a bit of a pain. It requires an third party script which isn't free. So it basically comes down to the following, what kind of forum do you want?

Do you want a super basic forum with the basic functionality or do you want an advanced forum with lots of users who are active ?

If you want a forum up and running with the basic features and not a lot of users. Then your choice is either bbPress, Vanilla or SimplePress as far as I am concerned. However, I haven't used SimplePress in years so I can't comment on its compatibility with DMS.

If you want a full featured forum, then you choose between vBulletin (new version sucks), IPB or Xenforo (what I would recommend). However, to implement them, you will require a bridge script or an advanced member management script such as aMember, which offers support for implementing these forums into WordPress or vice versa. However, this requires sometime to get working and is a bit of a PITA.

Never used MyBB, never liked the look of it and I can't comment on its security. However, bbPress would be secure due to its nature with WordPress and IPB, vBulletin and Xenforo, have a whole team working on them and their communities are full of developers who help them.

So the choice is up to you.
