Need Help Identifying Text Element in TextBox Section For Mobile CSS Control

Recommended Posts

Claude203

Though I know how to control the TextBox text using the Inline CSS field in the edit area, I need help to identify the element that controls the text for purposes of adding some CSS to govern behavior on mobile devices, despite using both Google Dev and Firebug. Thank you!

Hi Claude,

Inline styling shouldn't really be used extensively, as its really frowned upon. Instead you should add your own custom classes to the styling classes field and go from there.

For example, I add a class called:

my-uber-textbox

to my TextBox styling classes field, then add the following custom LESS:

.my-uber-textbox { ... }

To target the textbox on specific widths or mobile devices you will need to use a @media query with that class.

@media ( ... ) {
  .my-uber-textbox {
    ...
  }
}

One other quick related question. What does the #site accomplish, in the LESS/CSS? I notice that the CSS goes into affect whether I include that or not. Thank you.

OK, using the special Custom Styling Classes field worked great!

I used this:

@media only screen and (max-device-width: 400px) {
#what-we-do-textbox {
    font-size: 22px;

    letter-spacing: 1px; }

}

However, this approach does not work with every Custom Styling Classes field defined. Is there a rule of thumb on which Sections work, and which will not?

Specifically, I am trying to center the elements (image and text) inside the MediaBox that is part of the 2-Columns-Split section in our masthead, and this does not work:

@media only screen and (max-device-width: 400px) {
#banner-media-box {
    text-align: center; }

}

... even though the defined Custom Style Class "banner-media-box" controls the text in that MediaBox for the desktop CSS.

Also, this does not work, not even in the desktop CSS:

.banner-social-box {
margin-left: auto;
margin-right: auto;
width: 100%;
}

Could you please share any insights or suggestions on this? Thank you!

The style classes field works on all sections. However, the class is applied to the <section id="X" class="my-class-here some-other-classes ...">

So if you're lets say trying to target a header in a section with your custom style class and use the following CSS.

.my-uber-box {

  font-size: 20000px;

  text-align: center;

  color: pink;

}

It will likely not work, as you're applying that styling to the sections ID element and not the header element. To get around this, you will need to either inspect the element and see if that header has a class associated to it, which is it should or you can just use the header tag itself.

For example, lets say we have a section and it has a header/title that uses the h1 tag and it has a class called .entry-title. We can either use the following:

In the styling classes field = my-uber-box

In the custom CSS, we can use this:

.my-uber-box h1 { color: pink; font-size: 2000px; text-align: center; }

or

.my-uber-box .entry-title { color: pink; font-size: 2000px; text-align: center; }

Basically, you can add your styling classes field class in front of tags or classes used in that section.

For example, I have this Masthead section on my template and I want to make it look epic.

https://cloudup.com/cgUC10rCLB9

First thing I do is add my class to the style classes field - my-uber-masthead

Then add the following:

.my-uber-masthead {
  background-color: #9b59b6;
}

Which gives me this - https://cloudup.com/c5-ks5X4JoW

Now I want to give the Masthead title and tagline different colors, alignment, fonts etc... for this I will be targeting their classes. For this I will be using LESS CSS, as it easier. So first inspect the sections and find that the Masthead title and tagline have the following classes masthead-title and masthead-tag. Which I am going to be using.

The end result would look like this - https://cloudup.com/caBEUyI3vKj

The CSS is this:

.my-uber-masthead {
  background-color: #9b59b6;
  padding: 40px;
  box-sizing: border-box;
}
.my-uber-masthead .masthead-title {
  color: #FFF;
}
.my-uber-masthead .masthead-tag {
  color: #ecf0f1;
  font-family: 'Lobster', cursive;
  text-align: right;
}

LESS would look like this:

.my-uber-masthead {
    background-color: #9b59b6;
    padding: 40px;
    box-sizing: border-box;
    .masthead-title {
        color: #FFF;
    }
    .masthead-tag {
        color: #ecf0f1;
        font-family: 'Lobster', cursive;
        text-align: right;
    }
}

So hopefully this quick guide shows you how powerful the styling classes field is.

      Hi guys!
      I have noticed that my primary sidebar becomes intermittently invisible when browsing through various blog articles on michaelkummer.com/blog.
      See:
      https://www.dropbox.com/s/z646sgoa3mfjl1j/Screenshot 2018-07-12 15.57.46.jpg?dl=0 and https://www.dropbox.com/s/vdledzzgginvwgv/Screenshot 2018-07-12 15.57.57.jpg?dl=0
      Upon refresh, the sidebar appears. I have been using the following CSS code to hide the sidebar on mobile without any issues.
      @media only screen and (max-width: 993px) {
      /* hide sidebars */
           .plsb {
              display: none !important;
          }
      }
      I tried to add the following CSS to force the sidebar to show on screens that are wider than 994 pixels but to no avail. Any clue what could be causing this issue?

      Hi guys!
      I am using the LESS/CSS Pagelines extension and tried to add the following code to make use of FontAwesome:
      a.c2a:before {
          content: "\f07a\00a0";
          font-family: "Font Awesome 5 Pro";
          Font-weight: 900;
          font-style: normal;
          font-weight: normal;
          text-decoration: inherit;
          padding-left: 4px;
      }

      The issue is that as soon as I have the CSS via the Custom Styling text box, Pagelines (or the extension) strips out the backslashes (\). As a result, I had to abandon the CSS/LESS extension and instead add all my CSS code to a separate .css file.
      Is there a fix or workaround for this?
      Thanks
      Michael

      Hello, I am having a problem similar to that experienced by Michael Kummer here. We have pages that show this automatic scrolling issue (examples here and here) and it is sufficiently annoying that we have seen customers bounce while trying to convert. Strangely, it only happens at specific resolutions, so it can be difficult to reproduce. In general we can only consistently reproduce it on a 4k resolution with a browser width between 1517 and 1536px.
      Thanks to Michael Kummer's help we were able to set the overflow-anchor property to none in the entire body, which fixed the issue as far as we can tell, but also obviously disabled scroll anchoring for the whole site. I tried applying it to the specific element that looked like it was being reloaded, which was the PL Meganav extension, but that was unsuccessful.
      Can anyone help us figure out which element or ID we can apply this property to, so that we can fix the scrolling issue but not disable scroll anchoring for the entire site?
      Thank you -

      Hello,
      Shouldn't the image PL5 component be using the srcset/picture css directives to pick the correct size for an image? or it does already and I don't know how to use it? Thank you for any advice or enlightenment.

      Good Evening/Afternoon or Morning,
      I am running into a problem with CSS styling not applying inside of most browsers (Safari, Firefox) when I am logged in to wordpress, and all browsers that I have tested when I am logged off and the site has been made public (Chrome, Firefox and Safari).
      As a result, I have managed to identify the probable cause. It looks as though these browsers are refusing to render my sites compiled CSS file due to it being a HTTP URL rather than HTTPS.
      I have attempted to change this URL to HTTPS in my browser, however it brings back an ERROR: File not found page - https://www.shortfilmblog.com/wp-content/uploads/pagelines/compiled-css-core-1505847507.css
      What would you suggest in this regard? Would this be resolvable from your end?
      Happy to provide any further details required.
