Sidekick plugin getting overwritten by different sidekick plugin

Recommended Posts

webmktco

Evan,

The past few websites I've used your Sidekick plugin, only to find a strange plugin on my sites that have nothing to do w/ your Sidekick.

Have you heard of this happening before?  How can WordPress overwrite your plugin w/ a totally separate plugin?

Here's a 30 second screencast showing what happens.

It's the weirdest thing I've seen.

webmktco,

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.  The problem is that there is another plugin by the same name in the main wordpress.org plugin repository.  Do you have the PageLines updater plugin installed?  If not, that may be the cause.

I have seen this update show up before.  DMS is not supposed to allow this to happen as the plugin identifies itself as a pagelines plugin, but it is ultimately up to PL/DMS to prevent this kind of thing from happening.

I brought it to their attention a while ago and I believe it was resolved.  What versions of DMS and sidekick are you running when this happens?  If you're on the latest versions, I'll need to bring this to their attention again.

webmktco,

This issue was fixed in DMS 2.1.2 released on July 3rd.  Please bring DMS up to date first and let me know if you continue to experience any problems :)

Hi Evan - I was experiencing this issue on a few sites as well and it did go away for a bit but this morning I logged in to notice two of my sites had the SideKick plugin overwritten again. I'm running DMS 2.1.6.1 and am wondering if there's a way to stop the auto updating for this plugin completely as a way to avoid repeating this situation. Thanks for your help!

Evan - My apologies, I have some more information about this. We use ManageWP to update plugins and it appears that is what was causing the plugin to update incorrectly. When I went in just now and manually updated from within the site itself, the update went through fine. For now I'm just going to turn off the auto update for this plugin in ManageWP.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.  I will ask the PL guys to take another look at this to see if this is something they can prevent from happening.

It is strange that simply upgrading through managewp would cause this though.  Stay tuned.

Just wanted to update you- I'm still getting notifications to upgrade your Sidekick for the other Sidekick plugin.

webmktco,

Thanks for the heads up.  Can you tell me which version of Sidekick & DMS you have installed?  Also, are you experiencing this with or without the PageLines Updater plugin installed (and if so what version)?

Hi Evan,

Sidekick 1.2.7

DMS 2.1.1

===

I just noticed that the DMS was outdated, so I upgraded DMS to 2.1.9.3 and the Sidekick issue went away.

Will this keep happening every time DMS needs to be upgraded (will Sidekick try to upgrade to the wrong plugin)?

Evan, apologies for the mixup. I just re-read the posts in this thread and the quoted comment above answers my question.

I'm using the latest versions of DMS2 and Wordpress and the Sidekick menu version 1.2.7 which I think is still the latest version, and I now need to update the menu. But making any change and trying to save the menu results in a "403 Forbidden Access to this resource on the server is denied!" message. I've checked the permissions and can't see anything wrong and I can make other changes including updating the Hero Nav menu on the same site… sandgateprimaryschool.co.uk. Does anyone know what's going on?

      Hello,
I wanted to let the community know that there is a problem that has happened on a couple of DMS sites that we manage. The problem is that there are certain plugins/sections that DMS uses (such as 'Accordions' and 'Sidekick') that will appear to have an update. However, when you actually update the plugin it is replaced but a similarly named plugin. Here are the original plugins:

      Original: http://dms.elsue.com/accordions/ (authored by @ellenmva)
      Replaced with: https://wordpress.org/plugins/accordions/

Original: http://www.pagelines.com/shop/third-party-extensions/sidekick/ (authored by Evan Mattson)
      Replaced with: https://wordpress.org/plugins/sidekick/

I just wanted to know if there is anything I can do to make sure that other plugins/sections do not get replaced when I update them in the future as well as bring it to the DMS community's attention so that others do not experience the same confusion and frustration. Any thoughts would be very welcome in order to avoid this in the future.
      Thanks!

      DMS 2.1.9.2
Sidekick 1.2.7   Am probably missing something simple here, but is there a way to have clickable link in the menu that simply expands/collapses the menu? (Menu set to Expandable mode, WP Menu mode.)   Here would be a simple WP menu:   Business Home: http://homepage.com/business HR: Benefits: http://homepage.com/business/benefits Form 1: http://homepage.com/business/form1 Form 2: http://homepage.com/business/form2 Form 3: http://homepage.com/business/form3 Policies: http://homepage.com/business/policies Contact Us: http://homepage.com/business/contact
In this case, we have "HR" there only for organization on the menu, however we don't necessarily have a dedicated page just for HR. We're looking to make "HR" clickable just as the other items would be, but just expand/collapse the submenu. (Basically, the same functionality as the expand/collapse arrows, but also for the item title)

I've seen for some other types of menus, you can just put the link for the menu item as "#", but that doesn't seem to work to expand/collapse the Sidekick menu.

Was there something I was missing?

      Thanks,
      Eric

In addition to a few other settings, like Expandable, Accordion, etc...

      Global Site Settings:

      Mode: WP Menu
Default Menu: (one of my menus)
Fallback Menu: (one of my menus)

      Local Settings:
      Mode: WP Menu
      Menu: Default

Sidekick only works if I set the menu at the Local Settings level. I want to set it once at Global Site Settings level.

      Please help. tyvm.
