DMS caching issues?

Recommended Posts

sheilahoff

I just launched a new site today at http://www.myideallife.com

It all looked great in testing. But the client was complaining about speed. So when I went live I checked on the DMS caching which of course I'd had disabled all during testing. My best guess is that is what is causing screen display issues as evidenced in my client's screen capture: http://www.hoffmangraphics.com/downloads/screen-mess.jpg

It doesn't always look like this but 4 of us have seen it at least once on all different computers and browsers. Any insights as to cause/fix would be appreciated. At first I thought maybe I updated DMS today, but I didn't. I think I updated it on one of the two test sites to try it and when it messed things up I chose NOT to update on the one going live today!

Thanks for any help.

Sheila

Hi Sheila,

Please be aware that we do not provide support to users running out of date versions of our app. You will need to upgrade to the latest version, be support can be provided. As it is nearly impossible to diagnose your issue, when you're using such an out of date version. Be sure to perform a backup prior to updating.

Also, you do have an error on your site which is this:

GET http://js-agent.newrelic.com/nr-411.min.js net::ERR_BLOCKED_BY_CLIENT

In my opinion and from the looks of it, it could be an issue with DMS from the version you're using and/or a hosting issue.

Thanks Danny. I'll look at updating today and have my dev look at that New Relic error. Appreciate the clue.

OK, I've successfully updated the theme. Maybe you can take another look? As far as I can tell it only happens on first visit in a new browser. A refresh fixes it. I need to find a way so it doesn't happen at all though.

Still having issues. I've updated DMS to latest version. I've tried completely removing the media queries in case they're doing it. I may possibly have narrowed this down but need some insights... The problem seems to be that the blue image with the client's photo is placed in a  media box in a full-width canvas. But it appears that when the problem happens it's not coming in at full screen size. In turn that makes the top white area way too deep and puts the 3 iBox images overlapping the media image at the top instead of below. It may only be on Macs or on certain size monitors.

I don't know if there's a better way to put that big image in there. Because we wanted it to be linked to a page and NOT be a slider with all that implies, I used this in the embed html box. I have vertical centering and padding disabled in the Media Box and no animation.

<a title="FREE " href="/jumpstart/"><img src="[pl_site_url]/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/homepage-text-embedded1.jpg" alt="Get Started at my FREE JumpStart!"  /></a>

I wonder if making that image a background image would help. But then we’d have an issue with how to make it show all of it AND how to link it to a page, right? I don’t have any alignment selected.

PS: I've left the DMS caching off in case that was related and the site has no other caching installed yet.

I have refreshed the site about 30 times and I am unable to see the issue any more, has this been resolved ?

The likely cause was either the version you were using, custom code used and/or plugins you have installed. It certainly isn't related to DMS cache.

Just happened again for me, you need to get that newrelic issue removed so we can see if that is the cause. As there is no CSS reducing the images width, so it has to be related to either that JS error or custom code i.e. scripts you may be using and/or plugins you have installed.

Thanks Danny....it's ALMOST fixed. I believe part of the issue was an extra canvas and/or how the canvas or Media Box was setup. It had the canvas set to height of window instead of no scrolling effect. Changing that helped I think. And the media box went from using html to inserting image directly and alignment none to centered. That also helped. BUT in one browser (Chrome I think) the image doesn't expand to fit so it shows white on the sides.

I'm disappointed to hear it still does the thing! My dev says that NewRelic message isn't related to anything.

Next things to try, either your FullBox section (would that work?) OR maybe the RevSlider even though I started there many months ago and there was some reason that didn't do it. Maybe now it would. I open to other suggestions.

My other dev that's been helping me with media queries is Aires. He's been awesome. He seemed to think it was a CSS conflict which we've explored extensively. We have multiple clones of the site. On one of them we removed ALL CSS and still had the issue. The clones are on a different server and the problem still happens. So that's another reason I don't think it's the server.

PS: all caching has remained disabled.

PPS: I just re-cloned the site at http://myideallife.wpstagecoach.com/ and used your FullBox. We'll see how it does. But if it works I need to remake the image as the text is now cut off.

PPS: DUH...that doesn't work! The image doesn't resize! On to the RevSlider. Nice section though for other things!

Hmmm….I must be missing something here as it looks like crap.

http://myideallife.wpstagecoach.com/

Can’t quite figure out the settings. I have it set on full height …and you can then see the iBoxes which is good BUT you still see the bottom of the image then. Maybe that's OK. It's pretty hard to troubleshoot when the issue doesn't happen ALL the time. So now we'll sit and see if this version is OK or not.

If it is I need help with how to make the slide be linked to a page. I tried adding a link…the only way I see to do it is with a button. And that will NEVER line up with her text.

As for image size my browser says it is 2,016px × 1,042px (scaled to 1,918px × 991px) and rev slider says For high resolution, 2000px wide x 800px tall images. (2MB Limit). So maybe I need to adjust the image? I could TRY a plain image and use RevSlider for the text and button. But having tried that months ago… I KNOW…. She’s VERY picky about typography (size, alignment, spacing, etc). I seriously doubt we can NOT get the text any way she’ll be happy with on top of a plain image.

Any help appreciated.

Sheila

If your developer states that NewRelic JS error isn't a concern we will have to take his/her word for that. However, the issue still isn't cache related to DMS.

The first issue you have is that you're not using the latest version of DMS, the site is using Version: 1.1.7.4 which you can see here - http://myideallife.wpstagecoach.com/wp-content/themes/dms/dms/style.css

So the first you're going to need to do is update to the latest version of DMS 1.x which is 1.1.8 or better yet, upgrade to DMS 2.x

The site I am viewing, appears to be fine in Chrome. I see no issue with the image not being full width. However, I am unsure as to why you're using custom CSS and a class on a Canvas section? Just use the image upload option instead. Then add a section such as MediaBox to add your text and buttons etc...

You can not make a RevSlider slider be a link, to do this you'll need to use custom code or use the Extra Slider option and populate your slide that way. Adding your text and button code there, by using the extra slider options, you have more control.

Not quite sure why you mention the image size, the image of that image is fine, as it is less than 100kb, you could probably reduce this further, but the size in my opinion is fine.

Now to to the issue, the image not loading correctly, being in the correct position and sometimes just looking odd.

The first thing is you're not using the latest version of DMS 1.x which I mentioned above, this need to be resolved. As we can not provide support to out of date versions, or better yet upgrade to DMS 2.x.

The second thing is, I am unable to recreate your issue, bear in mind that I am using DMS 1.1.8 not the version you're using. Therefore, the issue of the image not loading correctly or after loading looks just plain odd, the likely cause is either plugins, custom code you're using and/or your server. Who hosts the site ? Meaning who is your host and what is you package/plan with them ?

Danny I started a new topic because this thread's topic is caching which is NOT the issue any longer. Caching is off. I've greatly appreciated your help and patience. Because you're in a time zone 8 hours away, I'd hoped that starting a new thread with a different topic would bring in help during your off hours. It's hard to wait another 24 hours to hear back from you. And once you're handling a case it would appear others do not jump in. I can understand that. I'm just explaining why I opened that other thread.

Meanwhile My dev said he disabled the thing that caused that NewRelic error. You're not still seeing that error are you?

I THOUGHT the live site at http://www.myideallife.com was using the newest DMS. Interestingly....I WAS using the newest version of DMS 2.1.5. I actually crashed this site accidentally, by going into the Dashboard-Appearance-Customize setting. when I did that the DMS default theme took over and I lost my site because I had no child theme. So I installed an old blank child theme and then imported my templates from one of my cloned backup sites. Apparently I misunderstood how child themes worked. I assumed it used the DMS 2.1.5 but apparently it has the OLD DMS built into it?! How can I fix that? My site does have DMS 2.1.5 installed but the child theme is what is active and it does indeed say it's running 1.0.2. This only adds complexity to my other issues. How do I fix this on a live site at this stage?

Please advise. This is becoming an urgent matter.

PS: On the cloned site at http://myideallife.wpstagecoach.com I was able to simply activate DMS2 and nothing seems to have changed. Is that all I need to do? Then can I delete the old child theme? I don't understand how this happened.

Please use the child theme I created here - http://dannyholt.github.io/skeleton this works with DMS 2.x and is bare bones (hence the name), containing only the necessary files.

In regards to removing the old child theme, yeah you should just be able to remove it. However, perform a backup as a precaution. Then install the one I linked above.

Thanks Danny. I've successfully replaced the child theme with your Skeleton. I guess it just works with no hoops to jump through! Sweet. I backed up and exported templates in case, then installed Skelton, activated and removed the old one and all appears fine. I'm hoping that resolves some stuff.

Still working on other issues...on the navigation wrapping on smaller screens before going to mobile nav. Originally the client wanted the nav bar stretched out on wide screens. That has led to endless media queries and it's still not all right. I got the client to agree to try making the nav bar narrower by default with the hopes it won't wrap. I'm currently trying to figure how best to do that.

What do you mean by won't wrap, can you provide a screenshot please.

Here it is wrapping. http://awesomescreenshot.com/0fd3fra39a

We need it to shrink the spacing so it continues to remain a single line.

I see this on http://www.myideallife.com

batman....that's why we're testing fixes. Your original comment included much improvement of http://stacey.hoffmangraphics.com Have you tested the same there?

We think it's too many media queries and they aren't 100% perfect in that they have gaps. But as Morris told me... resizing the browser window isn't a good way to test anyhow. We're using several online testers like http://screenfly and http://mobiletest.me. But they seem untrustworthy. Everything looks great there and then the client send screenshots that look bad.

As far as I can tell the OTHER issues that were plaguing us SEEM to have been abolished. I haven't had any reports of lost CSS (page just looking ugly due to server not loading CSS) and the homepage big image getting obscured by the iBoxes or not filling the page. I think that's GOOD now on all devices?!!!!

We're liking going to accept the CSS fromthe dev site to fix the live one. Just interested in any further input on the test site at this point. Although if Danny has pointers on why the live site is doing that and we could fix THAT....we'd prefer it!

At this point I've moved the fixes on the dev site to the live site. It's being promoted as live now. I'm sure there are still issues but the ones I was first concerned with seem to be handled now.

Thanks all.

Has this now been resolved ? As far as I can tell, it is now working without the wrap, which as far as I see was caused by your custom CSS for the list items in the menu, most likely related padding or margin.

      Hi
      I have a map here http://www.iloveoffset.com/maps/
I want to add several pointer locations to the map, but when I do they do not appear.
On this map there are 2 pointer locations and as you can there is only one visible.
Earlier today I added 7 and could only see 4 so there is something odd going on.

My DMS 2 site http://www.heart-stone.com/ will not save any new custom css... I can still edit templates and publish those but any custom css that I enter never saves.
All WP files, themes, and plugins are up to date.
Any thought about what might be causing this?
