DMS and my web clients

Recommended Posts

circ2013

I have now done a few sites on DMS for clients and to date, I haven't had to give my clients DMS access.  However, in a new site I am doing I am thinking about using some of the built in tools such as RevSlider and background image options.  If I do this, I will need to allow my clients access to DMS so that they can update hero images, taglines, promotions, call to actions, etc.  However, it appears that if I give them access to do this, I will also be giving them access to ares such as page set up, site settings, and they will have the ability to change column widths and or even accidentally delete things...

Is there a way to grant access to things like RevSlider and Canvas backgrounds without giving them access to everything?

The only thing I have come up with so far, is to build the entire site using widgets and 3rd party plugins that can be inserted in a Widget Section and then the clients can update the content within the plugin or within the widget/sidebar section of the WP CMS and not within the DMS editor.

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

You can customize the toolbar, see this article for assistance - http://www.pagelinestheme.com/remove-dms-editor-toolbar-items-2/

However, I do think you're playing with fire if you allow your clients to edit things such as the RevSlider etc.. especially in my experience anyway. As they usually, just can't resist themselves and have to touch other things like a child and thus, end up destroying the site lol.

If I was you, I would inform them that you can provide maintenance and add their content changes for a small fee, that would be the best solution for both you and your client. You get the $$$ and your clients doesn't allow his/her curiosity nuke their site.

This should work as this client probably won't want to do the maintenance themselves anyway.

Also, I did do some more digging into my Widgets idea and I think I can get it to work as well.  I would add a canvas section abouve the WP Contnt/Loop, put the "Widgetizer" in that area and configure it to pull from a single widget/custom sidebar and then configure that widget to pull from something like Royal Slider or Slider Reveloution (installed as separate plugins).  This way, they can go into the slider plugin and change photos, promo messages, and call to actions all without having to be in DMS.

Now, question for you.  Do you see any performance issues with this approach?  Ie. am I adding a lot of extra code that will somehow impact performance?

Thanks again,

Scott

I don't see that having an impact on your site performance, as long as your clients site is using a decent host and not a cheap $1 per year deal. If they use someone like FlyWheel, (which they should invest in a decent host) there should be no issue.

      Hi
      I have a map here http://www.iloveoffset.com/maps/
I want to add several pointer locations to the map, but when I do they do not appear.
On this map there are 2 pointer locations and as you can there is only one visible.
Earlier today I added 7 and could only see 4 so there is something odd going on.
My theme is up to date

      Hello,
I've been having trouble unlocking the template section for past couple of weeks. When I try clicking nothing happens.
I've deleted my custom css and removed plugins. Im down to having only the following plugins:
      Akismet
      Contact Form 7
      DMS Professional Tools
      Pagelines Updater
      WooCommerce
It was working fine before i have no idea what's going on with it.

My DMS 2 site http://www.heart-stone.com/ will not save any new custom css... I can still edit templates and publish those but any custom css that I enter never saves.
All WP files, themes, and plugins are up to date.
Any thought about what might be causing this?

Is there a way to edit the custom CSS via FTP? I know I can edit the custom code in the Chrome editor but is there a file path I can use to find and edit the CSS directly from our FTP?
Thanks in advance for the help!

All fine in desktop viewport. Menu displays twice in hamburger mode. How to fix this please?
