Amended Columnizer

Hi,

I have made an amendment to the columnizer section within the DMS files as I could not get it to do what I wanted.

The file I have amended is:   /wp-content/themes/dms/sections/columnizer/section.php

Reason For Amendment:

I want to add a Linkedin icon and URL link in the same area that the Twitter and Facebook links appear.

(this is when using the default provided columnizer section)

I needed to add this myself as the DMS settings only contain input boxes for Twitter and Facebook, not Linkedin.

My Question:

Having made the simple addition of 1 line of code to the above file, I fear that such an amendment will be replaced the next time I update my DMS theme.  Is this the case and, if so, can I put my version of section.php in another folder perhaps so that mine always overrides the default?

A Better Way:

I realise that you can specify a widget and use that with columnizer instead of the default.  However, when doing so I loose all of the styling which comes with the default one and the icons which go alongside.

I'm sure that most of you DMS pros will be thinking I've made a hash of this and that their is probably a much easier way!

Thank you for taking the time to read my query and I do hope this also proves useful for other new users.

Additional Thought:

The current rendition of the pagelines.com site has a really nice black social bar / menu bar at the bottom.  They have obviously made a section to use for themselves.  Any chance this can be added to DMS for the rest of us or perhaps a simple section that somebody can make available?

Hi there, if you've edited the core files then yes this will get written over on update. You can copy the section folder for columnizer and in your child theme place in a sections folder, then insert the amended columnizer section. This will make it safe from updates.

The social bar at the bottom of the pagelines.com site looks like its been created using the same method as http://docs.pagelines.com/tutorials/creating-a-branding-area but using a simple nav on the left instead of the logo and no nav bar. So its literally two columns, nav on the left and on the right the font awesome icons with the links hardcoded. I'll pass on your suggestion though to have this included as a section.

James B Thanks James, I'll take a look at child themes; I haven't played around with them as yet.  Thanks also re the social bar.

      Hi-

In my footer, I have a columnizer set up with a widgetizer in it.  The widgetized area contains one widget with two custom menus.  Everything works great except for the gray line under each menu item that spans the width of the set column (currently set at grid column for each widget-6).  The gray line also shows up under the images in my flipper box (under Flipper Meta, I have the code- -to remove the dates;  I also have a shortcode to remove the karma sitewide).  Is there someway to get rid of the gray lines?

Thanks so much and have a great day.

      Hi,

      Background
I notice the default columnizer section uses featured image thumbnails for recent posts and the gravitar image for recent comments.

I like that effect and would like to use this default section using my own about content.

      Question
Is there a way to edit the default columnizer about content? Or, how would I customize my own columnizer section to use feature images for recent posts and gravitars for recent comments?

      PageLines DMS 2.1.1 Pro
Sidebar Manager Lite for my custom sidebars.

      Good day all,

I have added Columnizer to my footer and I have the default content by pagelines... On the 'Columnizer Configuration', I could see Select 'Widgetized Area' and the dropdown shows just the 'primary sidebar'.

      Now my question;

How can I create a new Widgetized Area being that the only widgetized area available is the 'primary sidebar'... I'll like to have an area called footer so I can drag in all the widgets i want in the footer into it.

      Thanks for the quick response.

I'm wondering if it's possible to add more social icons to the default layout of the columnizer section. I like the default layout (which I've been unable to duplicate with the stacked tags and categories section) but it only shows Twitter and RSS in the "Stay in Touch" section.

I'd like to have links to G+ and LinkedIn there as well.
