Writing to Servers File System

Recommended Posts

Hey folks - I keep getting the error below. I have tried to correct it and had no success. Site runs really slow. I contacted the host and they said they couldn't resolve it unless I knew WHAT server file. Anyway to determine which one is not writable?

It appears your WordPress install can't write to your servers file system. This may adversely affect your sites performance. Check with your host about resolving this issue.

Thank you. Should it be set to 777?

Well it just needs to be read/writable by wordpress.

Do you usually have to put FTP details into wordpress when you install a plugin/theme? Do you have any specific FTP code in wp-config.php?

Yes I do have to do the FtP thing to update plugins. Is that the issue?

So PHP needs FTP credentials to write to your own files, this is the problem.

You can try making that uploads/pagelins folder 777 it might work.

Not many hosts left that require FTP credentials for installing plugins/themes.
