Changes in Header keep disappearing

Recommended Posts

markland

I'm continuing to have a problem with DMS changes reverting back to a previous edit, or deleting all formatting altogether.

This seems to be concentrated when editing the header section - whether I add a two column layout with sections in each, or simply add a single section, upon reloading the page the section will disappear.

I have already disabled all plugins and ensured everything is up to date.

Site is creepyla.com

Please help... and I'm willing to share admin creds with a Pageline rep.

Hi there,

Someone else reported something similar earlier this evening but I've not been able to re-create it. Do you have section caching enabled in the Pro Tools plugin option? If so disable and try again to see if that resolves. Let us know if not and we'll take a look

Kindly search the forum and read the documentation before posting. It will help you resolve many issues.

For CSS help be sure to check out W3Schools first and be sure to download FireBug for FireFox for troubleshooting.

No - as I mentioned, I disabled all plugins and the problem remained.

I am having similar issues with the footer. I have updated everything, tried disabling plugins, and my footers will not stay consistent from page to page. Some change, some don't and sometimes changes don't stick. activeplaybooks.com/home

Hey, Danny -- FYI I emailed you early this morning (PST). Confirm on receipt if you can. Thanks!

FYI - I still haven't heard anything back from Danny after sending him login credentials three days ago. Sorry to be impatient, but I'm in a holding pattern on doing anything else until this very serious issue is confronted, my only alternative being ditching DMS.

markland - Your issue appears to be related to the plugins you have installed, I disabled most of them and the Masthead section I added to your Header Area, appears there now with no issue. Also, I had to disable them to access your DMS editor, therefore, I recommend you update all your plugins that need updating and see if this resolves your issue. If not, then you will neither need to find alternatives or contact the plugin developer for assistance.

flourishdesignstudio - I have viewed the site and I am not seeing any issue. The Footer area like the Header area is a global template area, meaning that anything you add in these areas will be visible through your site, you can not currently have a different footers per page.

Danny -- when I uninstalled all plugins, the problem was still occurring. (I pointed this out before, twice - it's very frustrating to have to keep pointing this out).

The problem is also happening with others. Considering this isn't isolated, I really wish Pagelines would dig deeper. Again, I'm left in a holding pattern.

Currently, you can see 3 footer variations on my site. (see below) The footer area includes the columns that include the book/DVD, "Our Workshops and Trainings" and "Additional Information For" columns. Specifically, you'll see that the last columns varies on all 3 links even though they are all part of the footer section.

Here's a screencast illustrating the problem. http://screencast.com/t/3cwxpWba

This is NOT what I am trying to achieve. Unfortunately changes to the footer are not affecting the footer site-wide. This was also true when I turned off all plugins.

Please help!

That sounds like a much different issue than the one I'm addressing, so definitely should be a different thread altogether.

I wanted to test out header changes as well, and I am having the same problems in my header. There was content in the text box, I went to edit it, and then the text box is empty. On the live site, it appears that something is there, but nothing is in the text box. Furthermore, the header is now inconsistent throughout the site.

Instead of making progress, my site continues to get worse.

The header should look like this: http://activeplaybooks.com/product/active-play-fun-physical-activities-for-young-children/

But, on many of the pages, now looks like this: http://activeplaybooks.com/home/

flourishdesignstudio Can you send a logon for your site - to hello @ pagelines.com and we will take a look for you.

The answer to many issues can be found by searching in the forum before posting as someone else  may very well have had the same problem before you have.  Also, reading the documentation can help you gain a good understanding of how everything works.

markland - you have 193 other sites using the same server as yourself http://d.pr/i/flOO asking to be moved to a different server or purchasing dedicated hosting will improve site performance

Also i contacted Hostica (your Host) and asked if they used Caching on their hosted sites and the confirmed that they did. You could ask them to diable this whilst you are working on your site and you should have no problems. Using caching whilst developing sites causes problems and is well documented on the forum.

here is a line from the chat transcript http://d.pr/i/RgHy

EDIT * - i asked them if they could disable caching and they said no.

It may be well documented on the forum, but how is an average joe like myself supposed to be able to find this info?

Ugh.

This should be clearly outlined.

But many thanks for looking into this and providing some sort of resolution (even if the resolution is, get a new host or dump DMS).

markland - When I was logged into your website and all plugins were disabled, I refreshed your site over 10 times, configured a Masthead section, removed it and then added a Hero section, configured it, there was no issue with any of the header sections being removed. I then added a Masthead again, replacing the Hero section and let it there by default. Maybe the cache didn't kick in during my testing period, I don't know. All I know is that when all plugins were disabled, DMS for me was working as intended.

In most cases the resolution isn't get a new host. However, if you're using cheap web hosting which from the looks of it you're then yes, its comes down to either:

  • Upgrading your plan/package with your current host.
  • Move to a host recommended by us, such as; FlyWheel, ZippyKid, WP Engine.

When you search for your host, this is what you get - http://d.pr/i/6lQt

$1 hosting, is likely your issue. You're using cheap web hosting, there is a saying "you get what you pay for", well when it comes to web hosting this is most definitely the case. All cheap web hosting companies use something called shared hosting, which basically means the host will advertise saying unlimited databases, unlimited space, unlimited bandwidth etc.. this just isn't the case, you do not have unlimited anything.

Another thing they do on shared hosting is they over populate the server with hundreds (the current record we've seen is 1839 websites on the same server) of other websites, all sharing the same resources and as you can imagine, will mean poor performance. However, its cheap so this is to be expected.

If you're going to take pride in your website, then I am not sure as to why anyone would dream of using cheap web hosting. I recommend one of the following I mentioned above. I haven't personally used ZippyKid or WP Engine, but have used FlyWheel and they were awesome.

This is something that shouldn't need to be documented by PageLines, its up to the user. If the user is using cheap hosting, you have to expect issues with performance, running scripts etc...

I agree it's cheap web hosting, but it's the web host I've used for over a decade without a problem until I started using Pagelines. (and while they have $1 hosting with extreme limitations, this isn't what I'm using).

Since Pagelines DOES list some requirements in its documentation (which my host meets), it does seem like any requirements should be posted. More importantly, on the Pagelines tour, the site boasts that Pagelines works with all WordPress plugins, which is clearly not the case.

Again, I appreciate this being looked into, but Pagelines needs to be more forthright about system needs and limitations.

I've had to go in and manually do work to make some of the pages match better, as my clients are ANXIOUS for this problem to be resolved (me too!). Tomorrow morning, I'll be installing an old version of Pagelines, so this site will not be available for troubleshooting. If you do any troubleshooting at this point, please be mindful that the header shows on the landing page and is therefore public. Thanks!

BTW, I just went in and tried this again and hope maybe this isolates the problem:

1. I went in and added Tripset to the header. After entering in three posts (8772, 8918, 9066) and clicking save/refresh, Tripset completely disappeared from the header.

2. I then tried adding Tripset to the body, and it is now there, without a single problem.

Alas, in spite of my host, I really think this is an issue either with Tripset or Pagelines. I have all plugin inactive besides Tripset and DMS.

---

Additional problems when I try to add "two columns" to the header. On the right, I have widgetizer, with my custom ads sidebar, which works fine.

However, when I add items to the left/other column, changes don't stick (specifically, adding the media box with an image), and sometime totally removes that two columns and reverts back to a previous version.

You'll see that I have already submitted a screencast (above). This morning, I am going to install a previous version of DMS, so please do not use the links or login info that I have previously provided for troubleshooting, as they will no longer be relevant.

UPDATE: I installed a previous version of Pagelines this morning (one version back 1.1.2 ) and I am still having problems with changes not "sticking". You'll see in this screencast that I have made edits to a textbox within the footer section, saved, updated and then refreshed the page. Upon refresh, the changes are lost and it goes back to the original state (before the edits were made).

Furthermore, the footer on the site pages is not consistent, further illustrating that there are 2 issues: changes not saving and footer/headers not being consistent on all pages.

http://screencast.com/t/wFT9BJGg (BTW- Sorry for the creepy voiceover... not sure why I sound like an alien! ;)

I'm going to try to put this content within a widgetized area to see if I achieve different results.

flourishdesignstudio - LoL, you do sound like an Alien and I also can't for the life of me understand what it is you're saying lol.

Anyway, I do believe your issue is most likely to a issue with the saving in DMS, the issue has been resolved and will be included in an upcoming patch.

To see if this is the case, please do the following:

1. Add your content to your textbox.

2. Once added, click on another option.

3. This should trigger the saving spining indicator next to the publish button.

4. Once the saving has been completed, click Publish and then refresh you website, the changes should now stick.
