Ibox Disappeared Without A Trace (template too)

Recommended Posts

davekeys
I opened a website I'd done (http://charlottearea.com) to show someone what DMS does. The iBox I'd built on the home page, and another ibox I put on the about page, GONE! Just like that. I run about 200 websites so I don't know if I sinned by upgrading wordpress or maybe upgrading DMS. Either way, Should a mere upgrade trash an entire component from my website?

"No problem.", thought I. "I can just call up my saved template and restore the layout from there." I was wrong. The ibox also disappeared from my saved template.

Call me unhappy. Call me ready to go to a competitor and renew my account. Call me ready to throw up my hands and say DMS is not ready for prime time. What am I supposed to think? At any time, any website I develop in Pagelines might have a seizure and lose important work?

I don't know about this platform any more and I was such an ardent supporter.

PS. Let's not go down the road of "Maybe you accidentally deleted..." I wouldn't be so stupid. Maybe to delete a section from one page, but not from yet another page using another template and certainly not from the template itself.

Now I have to figure out what to do when the client sees this mess if nobody helps me recover it in time, if that's possible.

Hi there,

I've checked with our developer team for you and they've advised that adding a section into the template shouldn't wipe the template. Was it adding the section to the template which caused this or did this only happen when the theme/wordpress was upgraded?

If you have any third party plugins active, please try disabling them to see if the ibox section returns, it could be a conflict which has caused it to fail to display on the template. Also please enable your debug in global options>advanced>debug so we can check to see if anything within the server setup could be causing a problem.

If you want to revert to a previous version of the site to resolve quickly, if you have a client viewing etc. Check with your host if they do a roll back service, most hosts will allow you to revert to a version a couple of hours-days old.

Kindly search the forum and read the documentation before posting. It will help you resolve many issues.

For CSS help be sure to check out W3Schools first and be sure to download FireBug for FireFox for troubleshooting.

Thanks James, B. I disabled every plugin but unfortunately, the ibox sections did not return. I didn't add or remove a section from a template. I did, however, upgrade the theme when I saw the upgrade notice.

Hi, Can you enable PL Debug mode please (DMS Toolbar > Global Options > Advanced) and reply here when you have done, so we can take a closer look.

Never had time to debug. I just rebuilt it. May as well close this one as unsolvable. Thanks guys.

It's worth investigating further as I'm still having the same issue.

If you can provide any more information as to how we can recreate this issue, we will investigate it further. However, none of our support team have been able to do so.

Hi,

I didn't receive any screenshots unfortunately. However, screenshots aren't really going to help in this situation. Therefore, would it be possible for you to record the issue, so we can see first hand what is happening.

You can use Jing to record your screen and then upload it to screencast, then provide a link to the recording so we can view it.

Danny They were screencasts (not caps). I spent a long time recording them and emailed you a long message along with my login instructions for the site.

Hi.

OK, so I did receive your email, it was added to my spam folder for some odd reason.

I recreated your issue, as I usually do not use the refresh for preview. I always use Publish > Refresh. I have reported that there appears to be an issue with the refresh for preview not displaying your changes, until added twice. For the meantime, just make your changes, then use Publish > refresh once the changes have been saved.

Also, your code for added a font color is wrong, the same goes for your color in your color picker (the pink color), you're missing # infront of the color hex code. You may want to correct this.

Also, not sure as to why you're add the following <center><h4><font color="">....</h4></center></font>

The font attribute isn't supposed in HTML5 and should use CSS instead, something like this.

<h4 class="center">Quotes from <span class="pink-text"><em>Pornography: The Secret History of Civilization</em></span></h4>

Add the following to your custom CSS:

.pink-text { color: #F09; }

As for your issue with images, its difficult to tell what is actually the issue. Are you saying that when you have 2 iBoxes with images, then set it to three boxes, add an image via the Media Library and saved/refresh, the image is added, but the second iBox image has been removed ?

Danny You need to watch the beginning of the third part of the screencast. THAT is the issue I am talking about.

These other issues suck, but that is the one that is really problematic.

Ps thanks for the CSS font info. That helps a lot.

Yeah I noticed that and it is certainly weird, but I was unable to recreate it when I used the same code ? Do you have any custom scripts at all running? Can you disable all active plugins except DMS Pro Tools and see if the issue persists.

As that issue with the boxes moving column is weird.

Also, don't use <font> from now one, use CSS instead.

I turned off the UberMenu (the last remaining plugins) and the issue remained.

There is one script re: PopThumbs (which I think I'm not even using -- it removes the + sign). I'll remove the script and test it out again.

I will use CSS. I was only doing those formatting things to have something to do while waiting for it to break for the screencast. It's not the styling I even wanted.

The breaking of the columns is totally hobbling my ability to build sites.

Could this be related to section cache and the Pro Tools plug-in?

Danny I just tested it (with the script removed) and the minute I put an iBox in the right hand column and hit refresh, it did the same trick as the beginning of Screencast 3.

as I said above, this is completely hobbling any productivity I could have with DMS at the moment.

OK, can you reply and give me permission to play about on your site so I can see if I can recreate the issue. Once I have permission, I will try on your site, as I am unable to do so on any of mine.

Danny sure, of course you have my permission. The site is not currently being used. It a built from scratch DMS upgrade of a site that is still being used by my students, so do whatever you want.

I totally appreciate your help here.

Wow, this is unnerving. Don't refresh, don't use certain HTML tags, don't use anything 3rd party. Don't use... what's next, don't use a wireless keyboard? Don't use any Chrome extensions? DMS is a bit like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates.

I have been with Pagelines for three years now. we expect this with upgrades. it's a bit rough at first, but then things smooth out.

Danny I am not sure if I told you this, but it seems to be the case that when you edit whatever is in the left column, the right hand column disappears. that is how it has always happened to me. it has never been the case that fucking around with the right hand column has caused the left hand column to disappear.

Also, I have a repeat of the same problem of changes not saving (and needing to be saved twice) when I hit the main refresh button. I had had this experience before, but I wanted to test it again before I mentioned it.

Also, the site has been upgraded to multisite since you were last there.

davekeys.

Not sure what you're referring to really, when did we say you can't use HTML tags or when has any PageLines staff member said you shouldn't use any third party extensions ?

We use numerous plugins on PageLines.com for example Wordpress SEO etc.. What we do not recommend is users installing 300 plugins when there is no need or installing plugnis that are not on the WP plugin repository or plugins that haven't been updated since the dark ages.

In regards to the HTML tags, we do not recommend is using old non-HTML5 such as <font>, you should use CSS, its easier and better. However, if you want to use old HTML tags, you're free to do so.

I wouldn't use a Wireless keyboard if you paid me, regardless of how much the keyboard costs they're all naf. Wired > Wireless.

Not going to be happy I don't think, I am unable to recreate your issue on your site lol!

However, I never used the Refresh for Preview (I never actually use it) I only use Publish/Refresh. Also, your issue in regards to your HTML tags not being displayed when you click the Refresh for Preview, is related to something called data-sync. You can see the issue I reported for more information by our store devs.

https://github.com/pagelines/DMS/issues/468

In regards to your issue with the Column being pushed below the first column, I followed your actions from your screencasts and was still unable to reproduce it (PITA).

So all I can suggest is, try and recreate it on a vanilla install and on a local setup using MAMP or similar App. Then see if you can still recreate the issue. Again, remember I wasn't using Refresh for Preview, I was using Publish/Refresh.

Try using your method and then do the same using Publish/Save and see if the issue persists.

I apologise I wasn't able to recreate the issue, trust me when I say this, it annoys the hell out of me when I can't do it, when you clearly have an issue as seen from your screencast.

You have my email, so if you can recreate it on a different server (local), with vanilla installation (i.e. Latest DMS/Latest Wordpress nothing else). Also try both the refresh for preview button and then again with Publish/refresh.

thanks so much. I do understand. this is just how troubleshooting is. T,W,TH are my work all day and all night days (I teach until 10 tonight, and then 9-5 tomorrow). But I will have a look as soon as I can. Don't worry if I don't get to it until Friday. I am still going to get to it. I will work on this and see what I can find out.

Thank you so much for your help through this. I really do appreciate it.

Here's a quick update: I managed to find time and spent an hour or so trying to break it as currently installed (I didn't have time to do everything you suggested). I found that I could not break it again.

I also found that I had to follow a specific sequence to get changes to save: 1) Publish ==> 2) Refresh. (This is not how I had built my other sites, last Summer, just FYI).

I also discovered that Chrome had all of these extensions enabled, none of which I knew about (I don't normally use Chrome). These were all turned off before I tested.

The refresh within a section still would not save. And saving a third iBox image deleted the second iBox image (again).

I wish I had more time. I will repeat the above on other sites/installs that were giving me problems.

If you see the report here you will get more information on the issue, in regards to your settings not updating. https://github.com/pagelines/DMS/issues/468

Not sure what you mean by last summer, are you referring to this year ?

Also, your issue with the iBox image being stripped, how are you recreating this, can you provide the exact steps please.
