IE8 Problems

Recommended Posts

allenkiely

Can someone please explain why, when  you have stated in your sales documents that you DO support ie8, that the site I just develops looks like pants in ie8.

I have a client that I have developed a site for that is a large organization that is running XP with IE8 and has no plans to upgrade. Bottom line is I need to find a solution, as they are demanding that it is optimized for ie8. This for a commercial event, that went live a view days ago.

A serious case in point is the fact that Quickslider is not supported, which I have used throughout the site and on landing pages etc. Also, the homepage doesn't hold the column structure in ie8. i tried to attached screen-grabs to this email and your upload feature failed, but if you view the site on XP in IE8, none of the formatting/styling holds its position and the quick-slider doesn't display at all, images are cropped.

I have spend many days developing this site and don't fancy the idea of having to try find alternative at this stage. I appreciate you can't cover all browser, but you have stated, that ie8 is supported.

If "pagelines" can contact me directly as this is a major problem that I need a solution for ASAP. I would consider professional support services at this stage to try and fix this, or clean it up as my client is going mental

Regards

Allen

Hi,

Allen, can you provide a number of screenshots for your IE8 issues, as many of the our support team including myself don't have access to IE8, as we are OSX users. Also we only provide limited support for IE8, as it doesn't support HTML5 and CSS3.

The best way to provide screenshots is to take them and then upload to a service like Imgur or use Droplr, then paste the links here. If you attach them, it may reduce the size or quality of the image.

I am also a MAC user,

With respect, as a support team you should a the very least be running Parralels on your desktop to test/troubleshoot these issues.

Which is what I am sending you screen grabs from

After reviewing your site, you may have problems with your custom code (which we do not provide support for), as you have used background-size: cover on a few of your images mainly in your header and this property isn't supported in IE8.

http://www.w3schools.com/cssref/css3_pr_background-size.asp

You also will probably have an issue with your video, as the iFrame is set to 100% width, IE8 doesn't like width 100% and this will probably be the full width of your page pushing the countdown below.

From what I can tell after reviewing your site, most of these issues aren't DMS related to be honest, but related to your custom code or issues with the plugins/widgets you're using.

Therefore, what I recommend is (seeing as how annoying as hell IE8 is), is to install our Browser Specific CSS plugin and add alternative CSS styling for the IE8 browser. You can download Browser Specific CSS here - http://launchpad.pagelines.com/api/store_free/

There are also instructions here - http://docs.pagelines.com/tutorials/browser-specific-css

Regarding Flipper, that could well be a bug. However, it may also be related to a js issue, you have a number of them that seem to be related to something called Rotating Tweet.

If you disable this plugin/widget/script whatever it may be and see if Flipper works in IE8. If not reply here and we can report it in our tracker.

Another thing to not is that, this isn't really an issue DMS or you Allen, its a problem created by both your client and Microsoft. Your client because they're refusing to upgrade from Windows XP (which is astonishing) and Microsoft for releasing the worst browser ever.

Regarding Parralels, I had it installed and removed it. It gave me nothing, but problems.

Thank you,

I will see if this helps,

It's not only flipper that I have issue with

The main issue is that quickslide is not displaying at all!! and the images in the header are also being cropped.

Is there someone you can direct me to who, I can hire to correct these issues?

See I am guessing here in regards to the QuickSlider, its very possible that it is actually still there but underneath the Book Tickets element.

The images like I mentioned above are being cropped because IE8 doesn't support cover, so you will want to use specific widths/heights then they won't be cropped.

You can speak to the the people over a Using PageLines and see if they're able to assist you.

then why would the book tickets column, expand out as far as it have, it looks like it's compensation for the fact the quickslider, isn't loaded

To find out if its compensating for the lack of QuickSlider or if it is simply overlapping it. Try removing the Book Tickets element and if there is no QuickSlider, then its an issue with the Quickslider, if its there, its an issue with the Book Tickets element and is its styling.

I have also resized the video to set pixels, and the righthand column widgets are still appearing across the screen,

as I said before the columns that I have created, don't seem to be holding their position

As far as I am aware, there shouldn't be any issue with IE8 and QuickSlider. Therefore, I have asked a colleague martin to look at your issue, as he has a Windows powered laptop.

One thing I would suggest is that you disable all active plugins and see if this resolves your issue.

Also, you have a cache plugin active, why is this ?

Cache plugins, should only be active when your sites design has been finalised, if not configured correctly, it could actually be the cause of your QuickSlider not working.

We don't actually provide support unless cache plugins are enabled, due to them causing so many issues if not configured correctly.

Hello Allen

I am looking at this now for you on IE8.

Is the version on your test site an exact copy of the live site?

The answer to many issues can be found by searching in the forum before posting as someone else  may very well have had the same problem before you have.  Also, reading the documentation can help you gain a good understanding of how everything works.
