Renaming wp-content folder on fresh WP install breaks DMS

Recommended Posts

Hi,

So I used a security plugin to rename my wp-contents folder to something else for security purposes and now DMS doesn't seem to load. I get the un-styled version of the theme. Is the wp-content folder or any resources it uses hard coded into DMS?

Thanks,

Hari

Hari,

I don't know what or who told you to do that, but it's probably the worst advice I've heard.  Renaming that folder will cause you to lose access to your themes, images, uploads, media, etc.

You can try to update the permalinks - Dashboard > Settings > Permalinks.  Just don't change them. Simply save the settings without change.

I don't know if that will work, as some links may be hardcoded. It may still leave your site a total mess.

Rob,

I did this on a fresh install of WP before anything (plugins/themes) was installed. So if you guys did things right, i see no issue. Was just wondering if DMS called the WP-contents folder dynamically or it was hard coded to use WP-contents and nothing else.

I am not sure if wp-content is hard coded, but please don't fall for the trap of these security plugins, they really don't really improve your sites security at all to be honest.

If a hacker wants to get into your site, they'll get in.

The best to way keep your site secure is with the follow:

* Use a good host and one that knows Wordpress (FlyWheel, ZippyKid, WP Engine)

* Use a strong password, using such plugins:

http://wordpress.org/plugins/zxcvbn/

http://wordpress.org/plugins/google-authenticator/

http://wordpress.org/plugins/limit-login-attempts/

* Keep Wordpress, plugins and your theme(s) up-to-date

You should read this article too - http://kovshenin.com/2013/dont-hide-the-fact-that-youre-using-wordpress/

May I ask which security plugin you're trying to use please.
