Manual Install Of Base Theme

Recommended Posts

COVVHA

I running PageLines Professional Edition 2.3.3 on a Ubuntu development system and I trying to install the Base Theme. Unlike version 2.3.2, 2.3.3 is trying to use FTP to do the install. Since I have my development system installed behind a firewall, passive mode transfers are problematic because of the firewall's NAT'ing the IP addresses. After clicking Proceed on the FTP dialog the site hangs. (The FTP server logs do indicate a problem with the passive mode transfer.)

Is there any way to do a manual install? Will downloading the Base Theme zip file, extracting it into the themes folder and running setup.php either from the command line or from a browser window do the trick? Or am I better off falling back to 2.3.2, installing the base line theme and then re-installing 2.3.3 (or upgrading to 2.3.4?)

Thanks in advance.

Um, there is no setup routine.

We changed nothing in 2.3.x to require FTP credentials, wordpress only asks for this if it does not have read/write/delete access on the file folders to do the update.

The 'base' theme is a simple child theme thats all.

I'll set the permissions on all of the directories and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for the quick answer.

(Note to self - read "Book of Duh before posting on forum.")

The problem was with permissions. I had set ownership for the whole directory tree to my user id to allow easy editing. Of course changes made via a web page are done under the web server's user id (at least on Linux) which didn't have write persmission. Set ownership back to the web server and everything is cool. Thanks for the tip on WP using FTP only when there's a problem with write permissions.

If its your server, id change to suphp, you wont get the permissions problem then, as the server will open php using setuid, so it'll be your username, not www/apace/www-data or whatever which is insecure as all accounts with php access can read all files owned by apache ;)

I'll look into suphp as a more secure alternative for development. Not sure the hosting provider has it, but I'll check with them as well. Again, many thanks.

Over the last month I had extensive communications with the developer of the (premium) Anything Boxes section (in Pagelines store) (Adam Munns) and the developer of the WP Polylang Multilingual plugin (Frederic Demarle).

This was because the following problem occurred:
Anything Boxes showed all posts of two languages (Dutch and English) on the respective static frontpages for each language. It should of course have filtered posts for Dutch language on the Dutch frontpage and English on the English frontpage.

The solution to this problem was simple in the end. When duplicating a page for use in another language the settings for Anything Boxes were not copied to the new page and I should have set these settings manually again on the new page. I wasn't aware of this, but it makes sense. Because of this the pages didn't know how to differentiate between posts from different languages.

The dev of Polylang told me that Polylang is currently smart enough to synchronize metas like Featured images and page templates but it does not work out of the box with metas created by plugins and themes but (according to Frederic) it is rather easy to add them in the list using the filter 'pll_copy_post_metas'.
He mentions that he is not sure that these 'PageLines Meta Settings' are stored in post meta but that would make sense according to him. He asks if the Pagelines dev team will be interested to support this feature in the future.

I'm also wondering if you will consider adding Polylang translation support for manually editable strings like the 'Read more…' strings in Pagelines Settings.

Well that's of course up to you but I thought to let you know to be able to take this into consideration. I also post this for other users in case they experience the same kind of trouble and are looking for an answer.

      Best regards,

      Hi!

I am using the shortcodes for tabs, as described in the documentation.

When I insert the following code:

      [pl_tabs][pl_tabtitlesection type="tabs"] [pl_tabtitle number="1"]Title 1[/pl_tabtitle] [pl_tabtitle number="2"]Title 2[/pl_tabtitle] [/pl_tabtitlesection] [pl_tabcontentsection] [pl_tabcontent active="yes" number="1"] Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit [/pl_tabcontent] [pl_tabcontent number="2"] Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit [/pl_tabcontent] [/pl_tabcontentsection] [/pl_tabs]

I get a strange output (in the attachment).

      Any ideas?

      Thanks in advance!
