How To Add My Own Custom Sidebar / Widget Areas

Recommended Posts

TourKick (Clifford P)

I added this to my child theme's functions.php: http://paste.pagelines.com/1q0

I added this to my child theme's 'sections' directory: http://screencast.com/t/bUauPf32Xkb

And this is one of the sections.php of those 3 in the screenshot: http://paste.pagelines.com/77t

I see all 3 sidebars in Drag and Drop.

I see them on the front-end where I dragged them: http://screencast.com/t/OoVPl4XH

But they're all looking empty (previous screenshot) even though I have contents in each: http://screencast.com/t/bqenKyng4r

Thank you for the help.

Hi,

Honestly, I truly wish I could answer this complex customization issue. It could be as simple as an unseen blank space or as complex as a conflict with a plugin, but this type of customization requires the support of a Pro and is not, unfortunately, supported in the Forum. Please visit http://www.pagelines.com/pros to find one of our available experts.

Needing a pro to get instructions how to effectively add a widget area? I don't think so. Simon or someone who does know should answer. If you don't know, my opinion is that you should pass it along to someone else who does know. No offense, just my opinion. I hope Simon or someone can help. Thank you.

Where did you get the code to create these custom sidebars, was it from here - http://www.pagelines.com/wiki/How_to_Add_Custom_Sidebars

There are already in my opinion enough sidebars within PageLines Framework. and using Widget Logic or a similar plugin is the best method.

Also, the reason as to why Rob suggested a Pro is that this is considered advanced customisation, which is what our Pro service is for. When our users don't have the necessary skill or knowledge to achieve what they desire, we point them to the Pros.

If we assisted in all advanced customisation questions on the forums, there would be no need for such a service. Our support staff are here to assist all PageLines users, but they're not here to design our users websites. We are to support any issues with PageLines products and point users to good resources that will assist them in creating a great looking website.

I found a different document yesterday, linked to in the forums prior to me asking this question. Following the instructions at http://www.pagelines.com/wiki/How_to_Add_Custom_Sidebars was successful (and as easy as it should have been). I'm going to say the trouble was partly my fault (trying to do too many different things at once), my local development site's fault (noticed sometimes some things work and other times they don't, even though my cache isn't enabled), and partly the fault of finding other documentation that didn't work (which said to use register_sidebar in combination with a PL section). Overall, very glad that documentation worked. Thank you. :-)

Over the last month I had extensive communications with the developer of the (premium) Anything Boxes section (in Pagelines store) (Adam Munns) and the developer of the WP Polylang Multilingual plugin (Frederic Demarle).

This was because the following problem occurred:
Anything Boxes showed all posts of two languages (Dutch and English) on the respective static frontpages for each language. It should of course have filtered posts for Dutch language on the Dutch frontpage and English on the English frontpage.

The solution to this problem was simple in the end. When duplicating a page for use in another language the settings for Anything Boxes were not copied to the new page and I should have set these settings manually again on the new page. I wasn't aware of this, but it makes sense. Because of this the pages didn't know how to differentiate between posts from different languages.

The dev of Polylang told me that Polylang is currently smart enough to synchronize metas like Featured images and page templates but it does not work out of the box with metas created by plugins and themes but (according to Frederic) it is rather easy to add them in the list using the filter 'pll_copy_post_metas'.
He mentions that he is not sure that these 'PageLines Meta Settings' are stored in post meta but that would make sense according to him. He asks if the Pagelines dev team will be interested to support this feature in the future.

I'm also wondering if you will consider adding Polylang translation support for manually editable strings like the 'Read more…' strings in Pagelines Settings.

Well that's of course up to you but I thought to let you know to be able to take this into consideration. I also post this for other users in case they experience the same kind of trouble and are looking for an answer.

      Best regards,

      Hi!

I am using the shortcodes for tabs, as described in the documentation.

When I insert the following code:

      [pl_tabs][pl_tabtitlesection type="tabs"] [pl_tabtitle number="1"]Title 1[/pl_tabtitle] [pl_tabtitle number="2"]Title 2[/pl_tabtitle] [/pl_tabtitlesection] [pl_tabcontentsection] [pl_tabcontent active="yes" number="1"] Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit [/pl_tabcontent] [pl_tabcontent number="2"] Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit [/pl_tabcontent] [/pl_tabcontentsection] [/pl_tabs]

I get a strange output (in the attachment).

      Any ideas?

      Thanks in advance!
