Issues with MoreFoot showing phantom content

The site is just a dev area but I have this issue on 2 others running PL 2.2.3/4/5. I have MoreFoot in my page template and it is showing content for the 3 sidebar areas however in the Widget area, there is no widget live in those areas. If I populate the sidebars with widgets, the new content will replace the phantom content. Removing the new widgets brings back the phantom content. I've removed or disabled plugins etc and no change. Anyone else have this issue or am I just being really dense? (it's been 100+ for weeks here in Chicago - maybe its heat induced :-)
