The Difference in "page template" vs "content area"

Ok, I just installed Framework. I am having a terrible time understanding the difference in the page template area vs the content area. If I have something in the content area, it will not show up in the page if the template area is blank. I know this is a Helen Keller moment here and I should have a breakthrough soon, but it seems like there would just be one option to select things for each area, not two! It is very confusing. Other than this stump everything else is working great!
