Confused about custom css

I'm confused In PPro I was used to being able to put in custom CSS in the section and have it work - it loaded that css last. But in the new Pageslines, it seems as though it loads the customisations first, not last. For example, I want to have a custom bullet list for a widget. I've created my css statements, loaded them into the customize-style.css. Some of the changes (like the images instead of text links) work because there's no "opposing" css definitions. But others like the bullet points and indents don't. When I do the Inspect Element display, I can see my custom code perfectly (style.css lines 48 & 49). However just below it is the standard css which overrides my code (style.css lines 565 and onwards). It must be a setup thing I don't have right, but can't for the life of me see it... What CSS code are you using to customize the bullet points and indents?
