Feature slider and multi-level menus broken on Mac/iPhone

Recommended Posts

re6smith

Hi, At our site, artoftheweekend.com, we're having a strange problem. As of sometime last week, the feature slider and a multi-level menu in the nav bar have stopped working *but only on my wife's Mac, and her iPhone (which has iOS 5)*. The failure is the same on Chrome, Firefox, and Safari on her Mac. On my PC (Win7) and on my iPhone with iOS 4, everything works fine. When we inspect elements from Chrome on her Mac, we do see that some errors are occuring. We're at a loss, any advice is appreciated!! Best, Rob

Additional information: the failure also appears in Firefox on Win7, but not on IE or (as I said previously) Chrome. In the Error Console on FF under Win7, I get the error "Image corrupted or truncated" from , and numerous "jquery not defined" errors from the site. I've tried disabling all plugins, one by one, and then all of them, no change.

Hey Rob! I checked your site in FF and Chrome on Win7, and Safari on Mac and the features area is working properly, and there are no console errors. Now, on the iPhone it's supposed to be responsive, but it's not. Do you by chance have "Disable Mobile View" checked in your PageLines options under Layout Editor? Un-checking this will make the mobile experience more enjoyable for your visitors. With that being said, the menu...I do however see what's happening, and that's with the 3rd level menu. The navigation area was recently updated to look better on mobile, but it does seem that there may be a bug with the 3rd level there. I'll look into this more here locally, but as a temporary fix for you, copy and paste the below code into your Custom CSS area, located under PageLines--->Custom Code. This is a band-aid, and will get it usable. Very quick few minutes of looking. We'll get a proper fix out if upon closer look it is indeed that 3rd level dropdown.
@media screen and (max-width:450px) { .responsive #page .main_nav ul ul li,.responsive #page .main_nav ul li ul {width:100%;} } @media screen and (max-width:320px) { .responsive #page .main_nav ul ul li li {margin-left:-30px;} }
Let us know if that helps, NIck

I don't have any issues on FF for Mac. I did some searching around and have a suggestion based on some things I read. Add a favicon image in the PageLines Settings. Right now you have an icon URL stated with a size of 0px x 0px (it should be 16px x 16px). If you don't have an .ico, then create one: http://www.favicon.cc/ This should be completely unrelated, but everything I've read about the error points it to a favicon or image problem (like changing the extension of a .jpg file to .png manually without editing the photo).

Okay, first: simple_mama: thanks for that comment, it did get rid of the "image corrupted or truncated" error I was seeing in Firefox. Nick: I un-checked the "Disable Mobile View" box, and I added the CSS code you suggested. The multi-level dropdown you mentioned I've changed to have only two levels: that did not fix the problems noted above. However, both before and after these changes, the site is broken in Firefox under Win7 for me. My Firefox version was 7.0.1. I just downloaded 8.0.1, no change. Then I downloaded 11.0: still the same problems!! What version are you trying!?! Let me be specific about the errors: we're seeing no buttons under the slider (just the pause button). The slider does not "slide". And the dropdown does not appear on the "Pick a Place" menu item. And we are getting numerous "jquery not defined" errors in the Firefox Error Console, followed by the final error: Error: unterminated string literal Source File: http://www.artoftheweekend.com/wp-includes/js/jquery/jquery.js?ver=1.7.1 Line: 2, Column: 12501

Ooops, sorry, I believe that may be the *first* error I'm seeing, not the last. Unsure of the ordering of errors in the FF Error Console.

The code I had posted would have fixed your 3rd level menu from displaying incorrectly, but if you have removed the 3rd level, the code will not do anything. This is what happens to your 3rd level menus' without the fix I posted above: http://screencast.com/t/iwuZRrNXjqph I'm running FF11 on Win 7 and have taken a screen shot of your site in FF. As Jenny noted, we're not seeing anything out of the ordinary (other than the previously noted 3rd level dropdown), the buttons are displaying, and the slides are sliding. Are you indeed running 11? You had mentioned FF8 so I just wanted to be sure. http://screencast.com/t/rSzOUXql Nick

Well, under the heading "you're never going to believe this one", we now know what the problem was. My wife and I, due to a current remote location, were both connected via our mobile phones. From the error above, I started thinking that given the size of the jquery file, that some sort of fragmentation induced by the network connection might cause that file to load incorrectly, and cause all subsequent problems (but strangely, only on some browsers). So we drove around and found a wifi connection. And the site worked perfectly. So, believe it or not, this error, which was the same on several browsers, on several platforms, but did not show up at all on Win7 IE or Chrome, was a result of being connected via mobile phones. I can hear the audible gasp from here! Thanks for all the help. Rob

Argh! I'm sorry, but now the problem is back, on a completely stable wifi connection, and this time it's not working on under Chrome or Firefox under Win7 for me!!! Obviously, there's something very strange going on here, and I'm at a complete loss. Can you please try on your machines again, and let me know what happens?!? Sorry to be a bother, but it's totally perplexing!?!

Just to add what clarity I can, now that it's failing under Chrome on my Win7 box, I can report that the first error seen when loading the page is "Uncaught SyntaxError: Unexpected token ." in jquery.js:3 Is it possible that jquery.js is corrupt somehow? I'm going reboot, it's that spooky. Best, R.
