Can I use both Custom Header and Feature Slider?

Recommended Posts

kywine

After days of not understanding, but building dummy pages and images to work with, I tried to wipe the slate clean today (except for posts) and start design over again. I would like to have both a custom header (which is a jpg of my site title) and a full width feature slider. At present, the full width slider that at one point replaced my custom header is showing up as a shortened content column width. Seems possible here, http://blog.junbelen.com/, but I haven't figured it out. Any hope? Also, in my redo, I lost the drop-downs under "About" in navigation. How to fix that? Thank you.

First, let's start with the location of documentation that will guide you through things: http://www.pagelines.com/wiki. Then, for the second course in this feast, let's try having you create a graphic image for your site, and uploading it via Dashboard > PageLines > Settings > Website Setup under "Custom Header Image". That's your branding logo. Don't forget to save the options. For the main course, let's look under Dashboard > Appearance > Menus and make sure that the menu items you want to have as child items under About are present and lined up correctly. They should be indented from About by one notch. If they're correctly placed and still not showing, it's possible that you have the menu selection in the wrong place. Make sure that your primary menu is saved and also saved under Theme Locations in Primary Website Navigation. For dessert, a nice up of coffee and one of those delicious looking confections on the site.

Thank you for the edible approach. I'm cheering up a little. But I haven't fixed a problem yet. Here's how the navigation set-up page looks, and I have clicked those save buttons repeatedly: http://screencast.com/t/HqfqP1uqox And here's my custom header image as presently loaded: http://screencast.com/t/awWCO2TH4m When I had a full width dummy feature slider in my header, this custom header disappeared. I can try that again, but ideally I'll know more this time. I have spent some substantial time with the documentation wiki. I have watched all but the final PLET video, and have watched the features sections four or five times, as well as going into youtube and watching some older videos that are more Platform-based, because I thought if I learned a bit more about how Platform worked, then I might understand more easily what the PageLines adaptations from that approach had been. I just still don't get the sort of cascade of steps through template, meta, and page construction, and how many of them I even need to address at first. I do, at least, understand much more clearly than I did at first how the drag and drop interface works to add different components in different aspects of pages/posts. Sort of. I'd really like to get past this newcomer misery. I have a large food blog that I'd like to convert to PageLines if I can ever master the thing so I can make changes fluently.

That's a generous offer. It's a long list, but right now these are the top two items: 1. I would like to have both a custom header (which is a jpg of my site title) and a full width feature slider. At present, I have the custom header (a jpg of my site name). I built a full width slider (dummy content and pics) that I have been able to install instead of the custom header, but not in addition to it, which is what I would like to try, if possible. Is it possible? Seems possible here, http://blog.junbelen.com/. Right now, my supposedly full width feature slider is showing up at the width of my content column. I'm going to be working on this, so if I have luck it may change before you take a look. 2. There are sub-pages that should be showing up under my "About" primary nav, and they are not. They were displaying at one point, but not now. What's wrong?

To add information about my number one question above (whether I can have both a custom header, followed just below it by a full-width feature slider), here are the settings for my default page template setup http://screencast.com/t/FNhY0X2qdab, and here are the settings for "blog" content area http://screencast.com/t/FNhY0X2qdab. I literally have no idea which one of these??”if either??”governs what shows up on my home page right now. I bumped into a new video about templates, http://vimeo.com/40013388, apparently just posted, and it does help explain the overall concept, and it does make it seem that a full-width feature slider at the top of the content area (thus, below a custom header) should be possible. BUT, crucially, it does not seem to address "blog" pages, which I assume is what I need addressed, since my home page is a blog page.

1. Just add both the feature and the branding section to the Header in PageLines -> Templates. 2. Enable secondary navigation in PageLines -> Settings -> Header and Footer.

Oh my goodness - those are just exactly the answers I needed, and they seem to be working (or, in the case of the header, very close to it.) Extravagant thanks, as I have been driven crazy for two weeks by this. simple_mama: you are my hero.
