Installed Whitehouse Pro - Please Help With Several Problems

Recommended Posts

cfisher

I recently purchased the WhiteHouse Prop and installed to WordPress 3.0. Any help that can be provided is greatly appreciated as my website is a live; thus, these issues are live too. The website: www.bmedreport.com I have several important issues: 1. Thumbnails included within each post do not show up except on the single page. Any ideas? I simply embed an image with each post (do not use the custom field). Please, please tell me there is a work around as I have over 800 posts. 2. The "more" tag is not being respected for any of my posts. Basically someone has to click on the article title (and only on the title) to view the entire story. 3. I very much want to display categories in my nav sub-header. However, this submenu does not display all categories that I enter - only some of them. Any ideas? I though maybe a spacing issue, but it is not. Certain categories do not show even if they are the only cats in the subnav. 4. Is there a way to have the category sub-nav show all the time?

I solved #3 already. It turned out that global categories with no posts (but had sub-cats with posts) did not show. Any quick help with the other problems is greatly appreciated.

Another question. I am using the black theme. For some reason when i set my Text Header Color, it has no effect on the website name or article post titles (they stay black) Is this by design? Interestingly, the website name did adopt the hoover cover only. Suggestions?

If you edit line 19 in _customcss.php to look like this: ` h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, h1 a, h2 a, h3 a, h4 a, h5 a, .post-title h2 a, .headline h1 a{color: <?php echo pagelines('headercolor'); ?>;} ` then you're title and blog titles will also change color. For #2 try modifying your theme options so that it shows the "full blog post" on the main posts page. This may allow the more button to take effect. #1 we use the wp thumbnail feature to display thumbs but to capture the first image from every post and throw it in there as the thumb automatically you follow the instruction here: http://www.wprecipes.com/how-to-get-the-first-image-from-the-post-and-display-it then paste the small bit of code on the bottom of that page where this line is in the _posts.php file `<?php the_post_thumbnail('thumbnail');?>` Let me know if you encounter issues while doing this.

Thanks for the response. I just switched the layout to full blog posts... it worked! Images now show... however, it created one problem: I now have double summary entries for each article... I assume one is the one I put before the "more tag" and the other is the excerpt the theme adds?? Is there a work around? This image problem is front and center right now but I will definitely try out the another solutions for the other problems you mentioned too. Chris

Sorry.. I don't know PHP... I found the line but I am not certain what to keep or through out: `h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, h1 a, h2 a, h3 a, h4 a, h5 a{color: <?php echo pagelines('headercolor'); ?>;}` Can you tell what to replace with the code you gave me? Thanks! Chris

I figured out the double entry mentioned above.. don't worry about that... I saw that I could turn off the excerpt and that solved everything... images show now too!! thanks! Chris

For the PHP just add this right after the "h5 a" ,.post-title h2 a, .headline h1 a

Any suggestions for question #4 above? It may not be possible with serious modification? 4. Is there a way to have the category sub-nav show all the time? Thanks, Chris

I don't mean to bombard you with questions. It looks like I am getting close to done with issues. Turning on "Show full content on all blog pages" and turning off excerpt solve my home page problem discussed earlier. However, I just noticed when I navigate by category (in the menu subnav), it only calls the title of articles - doesn't appear to honor the "show full content setting." Any suggestions?

I am really close to solving most everything now. My big hang up is getting the image to pass. I am using the link you provided for php script to call the first image. I placed the main script into the functions.php. Now I need to place `<?php echo catch_that_image() ?>' into the appropriate php file to call the image. Can you suggest where to best place this? I need to make sure it only calls it with excerpts so I do not end up with double images on the single post page. Thanks! Chris

Sorry. I saw you mentioned above where to place the extra code: `<?php the_post_thumbnail('thumbnail');?>' which I did. However, it not calling images. I put the main script in the functions.php Is this correct? I have to admit that I am bewildered that calling images is this difficult. I do not understand why it is a theme option, but one has to add all this code.

If you are out there, I could really use some help. I am getting weirded out that my site looks unfinished now for several days. Here is a summary of where I am at the images: I inserted this code (from the link you provided) into the functions.php:

 function catch_that_image() {
	  global $post, $posts;
	  $first_img = '';
	  ob_start();
	  ob_end_clean();
	  $output = preg_match_all('/<img.+src=['"]([^'"]+)['"].*>/i', $post->post_content, $matches);
	  $first_img = $matches [1] [0];   if(empty($first_img)){ //Defines a default image
	    $first_img = "/images/default.jpg";
	  }
	  return $first_img;
	}

I then inserted into the _posts.php this code:
<?php echo catch_that_image() ?>
(I inserted this code OVER the existing
<?php the_post_thumbnail('thumbnail');?>

) Can you tell where I went wrong? Thanks Chris

We have an option for the thumbnails but it utilizes a feature that you would have had to go in a manually set for each post since you were embedding them directly. I tried giving you that code so the thumbs would come up automatically without any manual editing for all those posts. For you future reference if the site goes white or blank after editing the code it just means your missing something simple like a comma or bracket. Also, I recommend setting up a subdomain for testing next time so you don't lose any readers while your site is getting worked on Regarding request #4 this is possible and I can help you with this, but I want to ask first, how do you wish to proceed...lets just take it one step at a time

I have 850 posts. I cannot imagine having to redo the images for these. Can you please look at the code and how I pasted it in? I noted it above very clearly. I'll hold off on request #4 for the time being.Thanks for asking about it though.

One suggestion that you might consider is to add this plugin to your themes: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/get-the-image/ It is sophisticated plugin that examines how you embed photos and adapts. I couldn't get it to work (due to my own technical skills) but I'm sure if you added to your preconfigured theme plugins this would eliminate headaches like mine for you.

I think I know where I went wrong on the main image script. I placed it in the theme functions.php This should go int the Wordpress functions.php ... probably a novice mistake.

No luck with the image script. I was able to add the main function code to the bmedreport.com/wp-includes/functions.php without bringing down my whole site :-) I then added the code snipet at the place you instructed in the _posts.php Nothing actually happened afterward.. any ideas? Chris

I found a plugin that got the images showing. It was not for Wordpress 3.0 so I was a little weary installing it...but aside from some minor sizing issues it works pretty good. The plug is Thumbnail for Excerpts in case anyone else has the same problems.
