Setting the number of viewable posts

Recommended Posts

In the Admin panel under settings/ reading - you can set the number of posts to see. What I am intersted in knowing is if I can have a different number of posts when you land on my site versus is you click on a category. If you go to www.lifeofanarchitect.com you will see that my posts are somewhat long and I have limited the number you can see to two posts. But if you click at the top on a category, the same value I set in the admin panel shows here as well (two). There is an open question that several people have asked about only showing the feature image and excerpt in the category pages and excluding them from the main page (Andrew said this would be dealt with in the next update) maybe these two items are related?

Robert, I checked the site and it looks like you already have excerpts on the category pages. Are you trying to make the category page like the main page? I guess I'm missing the goal here.

Sorry to be confusing. I wanted only two posts shown on the main page (because they are long) and more posts shown on the category pages (because they just have excerpts). Right now, it seems you can only set the variable once in the Admin Panel/Settings/ reading/ number of posts to see. I set the number there and it controls both locations. I wanted to know if there was another way to set the # of posts in each location differently.

Oh I see Some ppl have had success with this plug-in http://moshublog.com/2007/10/30/custom-query-string-reloaded-for-wordpress-23-with-tag-support/ but if it's not working with the update we can try some hardcoding...try putting this at the top of you _posts.php file ` <?php if(is_home()):?> <?php query_posts('showposts=2'); ?> <?php endif;?> ` So show posts set under READING can be one value then this can be the custom value.

worked like a charm! Thanks. This would be a good feature in the update.
