Looking for a responsive RSS-driven slideshow plug-in

Recommended Posts

papabug

FlickrRSS doesn't suit my needs. I don't want thumbnails; I want big images* from my Flickr account (or, even better, my 500px account). * = but not bigger than the browser window. Currently looking at Blip Slideshow plug-in, but it is not responsive to browser window size. :-( Is there anything out there that fits this need these days? Thanks!

Hi Papabug, I don't use Flickr myself, however I did a search for you and found two posts with a list of the best Flickr plug-ins for Wordpress, I posted the links below. http://speckyboy.com/2008/10/14/10-amazing-wordpress-plugins-for-flickr/ http://www.bloggingot.com/blogging-tools/20-top-flickr-plugins-for-wordpress/

Please search our forums, before posting!

Hi Danny, thanks, but I think you missed the part where I was looking for a *responsive* slideshow that works well on mobile and well as desktop/laptop. Given that these posts are dated 2008 and 2009 and I couldn't find the word "responsive" in either post, I don't think they meet my need. FWIW, I'm in the midst of working up a new plug-in that wraps FlexSlider (http://flex.madebymufffin.com/) for use in WordPress. If it turns out well, I'll release it and post about it here. (Unlike existing WP + FlexSlider wrappers, mine will be fed by RSS feeds such as Flickr, SmugMug, and hopefully 500px.) Was hoping to avoid that effort, but I have continued to search and found nothing that is responsive, RSS driven, and also a slideshow (as opposed to a thumbnail grid like NextGen).

If you could somehow make one plugin that would simply populate a list of images and then you could use a jquery plugin such as this to generate a slideshow from that list: http://responsive-slides.viljamis.com/

Responsive Slides looks great. I'm already well along in my implementation using FlexSlider, so I'll probably stick to that, but I appreciate the link.

There's already a WP plugin using Flex Slider that's not in the repository at the wishes of the original author of Flex-Plugin, who is/will be writing an official WP plugin for his Flex Slider. Envato did a stint on tuts plus and they have source files there. I also ran into this one that I use, and is responsive by nature. It fits pretty well in the PL framework. This one I like better because it's using core wp gallery and not shortcodes. http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/gallery-to-slideshow/ **Edit** Just read the "feed" bit. ;)

Yeah, the feed bit is the tricky part. I have a very rough cut of the FlexSlider + RSS wrapper working now* and, as you say, it does fit pretty well within the PageLines framework. I had to fight a couple of CSS issues (margins on list items, etc.), but in general it is working exactly as I had hoped. FYI the Blip Slideshow plug-in (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/blip-slideshow/) has some nice Media RSS parsing code. What I've done was to rewrite that plug-in using FlexSlider. *Not yet visible on the 'net. I'm now working on other parts of the site.
