building a community site with pro2

Recommended Posts

bestrag

hi I am building a community site using pagelines2. I've seen how to integrate buddypress with previous framework, but is it going to be the same using pro2 dev. I have some experience running wpMU, but I do not have any experience building community out of the box. Is buddypress going to work with pro2 theme - or there is some better solution to build profile like community. thanks great work

I'm having the same problem. I specifically bought PlatformPro because of it's ability to integrate with BuddyPress and BBPress. But there seem to be problems with both plugins even with the old version. When I asked about this, I was assured this would be addressed soon after the release of Pagelines 2.0

Hey yemoonyah, I also purchased PlatformPro because of that ability. I have lot of work to do about building a community and I thought this framework would help me out. After installation and some testing, framework just did not seem to agile to handle what I need. Ends up that I would need more time to tweak everything... Thank you for your info, I kinda hope that they will take care of it sometimes SOON, otherwise its just waste of time and money - and that - oh well - just sucks...

Same there. I decided for Platform because of the promise of the integration with buddypress and BBpress. Previous version never worked whell. With version 2.0 I don't see improvements. Woith 2.0 is even impossible to register to the community. please help.

Well, it seems like we need to get some explanations from pagelines! I am trying to solve the problem and I will keep posting until we get the answers that we all need. The good thing is that there is more of us, so they really ought to fulfill their promise. Like pgiuseppe said, I do not see any improvements, either. @pgiuseppe what do you mean it is imposiible to register the community. I managed to install and configure buddyPress, its just that it does not integrate well. So if you need any help please let me know. I will be glad to help you out.

Folks, the best way to build a community site is to use the same model we're using and you're viewing now. That's the self-hosted version of Vanilla. The downloaded version is free and without any limit on the number of members. We have a full integration built into some versions of PageLines 2.0.

@rangelone: we payed for a product that advertize the integration with a certain standard plugin. Pagelines stress also how important the customer support is. And now that we are asking about a functionality we payed for you suggest to radically change system.

Hey rangelone thank you for your evolvement to this problem, sure Vanilla is a very nice forum system, and as of version 2 it ships with seamless wp integration. Eventually user will end up paying one of the plans, but sure it works just fine ??“ its not cheap either... and yes we would have our widgets that would allow us to keep track of forum activity or recent posts, and that??™s all fine. However, the idea is to have entire user community with facebook look a like ability. And then later we could merge any forum activity within buddypress, for example. But the question still remains. How can we integrate such community management system with pro2 ? It is documented here but it obviosly does not give any results.

@pgiuseppe I looked into your site. I understand what you are trying to achieve and I hope that we will take care of it right here. Right now, I am not sure what to do... we will stay in touch though.

So for right now, pagelines dev2 does not provide support for budyPress. Looking at this thread it does not support bbPress either. arpowers said that we should wait for weeks/months... I am starting to wonder is that because of some dynamics that was explained over in the buddyPress forums that was started before a year or so. Right now I am looking to find the best solution to build buddyPress community using pagelines. Any idea is welcome

I went back to PagelinesPro and am trying to make that work with BuddyPress. Then, when Pagelines team is ready with a new BuddyPress plugin for Platform 2.0, I will try to upgrade again (I hope soon!) I started a thread about this over here, so if you have any tips, I'd be very grateful for any help: http://www.pagelines.com/forum/discussion/15901/installing-buddypress#Item_1 Let's try to connect everyone who has problems with either BuddyPress or BBPress, so we can help each other and have more influence. @pgiuseppe did you install the BuddyPress Template pack? I had the same problem on a test site yesterday and when I installed the template pack the pages appeared. Also, if you don't want to mess up your live site, use theme test drive plugin. It even let's you change the settings without your visitors ever noticing: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/theme-test-drive/ @rangelone thanks for trying to help but our problem is that we don't want to use Vanilla as it lacks the social features we need and that no one ever told us that support for BP and BBPress was more or less abandoned. They even took down all the old docs for PagelinesPro.

@yemoonyah
Let's try to connect everyone who has problems with either BuddyPress or BBPress, so we can help each other and have more influence.
I had the same idea. I already started linking to all threads that I found about same problem. I am VERY frustrated since I really made this investment mostly for buddyPress integration, and I want that to work. The answer is to wait for few months.... I dont buy that

@pgiuseppe your id named activity-stream needs to be properly styled with css. You have bunch of li elements that are representing your members, and than there is final li element associated with class load-more. These are needed to be adjusted in your custom css. Also there is div element with id morefoot_area that also needs a lot of adjusting. So basically pagelines framework should be taking care of all those elements and provide clean integration. That is unfortunately not happening.

I know that is a lot of work, beside this will be lost with upgrades.... Because this page is created automatically by buddypress I wonder if we could works together in creating kind of community solution for this issue....

Hey pgiuseppe, sure man, I am all for it. I am sorry it took me a while to send you an answer, I started to work on my project. So how about this, why dont we start private conversation and then we could update to community later on when we make it to work. You can send me an email > [email protected]

Well, integrating BuddyPress within advanced themes is always difficult and requires more skills than just installing a couple of plugins. The manin reason is that BuddyPress wants to make their own buttons, because of the 'user-name' integration in the links combined with them. In that way the menu user interface in not compatible with the standard wordpress menu structure. With so called 'compatibility packs' some of the problems are solved. But the thing is to make good choices as well. WordPress is a publishing CMS. From that central function, you can do many things to accomodate visitors in many ways. Forums, member areas etc. can easily be made with separate plugins. So if you don't need it ALL, please avoid BuddyPress and find 3 or more useful plugins to build some community feeling around WordPress. Those plugin usually integrate better with dedicated themes. Within PlatformPro I have used MingleForum, which is great. If you really want to integrate BuddyPress with a theme, take Suffusion, that works quite well, although some CSS editing will still be required. If you dion't want that, choose a simple BuddyPress theme, there are many. Not looking that nice (you cannot compare theme with PFP of Pagelines 2.0), but functional enough if that is your primary goal. If you want to look further, take a look at NING, social network out of a box.

I know this post is mostly about Vanilla and BuddyPress but a plugin that is helping me make small community sites is "WordPress Access Control". Allows great control over who can access what.

We're looking seriously at solutions for bbPress & BuddyPress.. We have several fish to fry internally, but ultimately, we could provide very nice plugins to support these platforms w/o much work, and that is the plan..

I found that SimplePress 5.0 works great also... it is fully integrated in WP and has lots of options. Just needs a theme adapted to Pagelines...
