How to use 'Profile' section

Recommended Posts

cybersphere

Hi, I purchased 'Profile' section to create a staff directory. Unfortunately, I can not figure out to use it. I thought it would be dragging and dropping Profile section to an appropriate template in WP-Admin > Templates, then open a Page and choose that template as a Template to use but that will not work as, unlike Boxes & Banners, it does not have its own section. When I did added 'Profile' section to an unused template, the page loaded with a message, "Enable users to get started" and gives me a link to WP-Admin > Users. This does not make sense to me as http://www.pagelines.com/about contains profile photo and profile as well as name so the info can not come from WordPress Users listing... I am missing something but I can not figure it out. Could someone please tell me how to use the Profiles, step-by-step, please. Many thanks, Paul

Paul, thanks for your patience as we all try to grow into the next evolution in web design. Here's a link that should be helpful. http://www.pagelines.com/wiki/index.php?title=How_to_Use_the_Profiles_Section

Hi Rangelone, Got the profile to load but I'm not sure where I can modify so that it only shows me set amount of profile for each individual users (bit like setting truncated blog on first page to only show the first 55 words). I would like 'summary' profile on the 'Staff Dir' page and when visitors click on each individual user to read more about them, it will open a full page with full profile. Thank you! Paul

Hi cybersphere, Do you mean so it looks like this: http://www.pagelines.com/about/ However, you want to be able to click on a persons image and it then take you to their profile page, is this correct ?

Please search our forums, before posting!

No, more like this. http://3.s3.envato.com/files/6900484/01_Recent_Posts.jpg Obviously, replace the image in sample with headshots and the text will be the start of people's profile text.

I'm flagging this to a developer for you. Please be patient as he's somewhat tied up at the moment. He'll get to it ASAP, I promise! Is there a link to your site and this page so we can actually look at it live? That helps us immensely to provide a solution.

Hi Rangelone, My site is: http://justitia.com.au/web/people I only have two people listed at the moment for testing. The idea is no matter how long the profile text is in its entirety, this page will only show short sample of those profiles so that height of each profile entry is exactly about the same height (eg. 1" or 1.5" tall). With a link on each short profile (eg. 'More') loading a separate page so that the end result is each person will have one page each that can be loaded. Maybe this image will clarify a bit. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/806/profileaf.jpg I would also like the ability to place a thin border around each summary profiles or emboss or in some subtle way, indicate that they are separate users. I would appreciate an email when this feature is available in Profile as I may not be monitoring this thread. Are you able to give me an indicative turn around time? I am hoping to get this site up and running in the next 2 weeks. Paul

I'm informed that there's an update available for the Profiles. Go to Dashboard > PageLines > Store and look for the Update button under that component.

@rangelone - I can not see 'Update' button. With Profiles active and de-active. Any tricks I should know about? : ) http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/151/profile1b.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/38/profile2ib.jpg/

Are you logged in with your PageLines credentials? Did you try clicking "refresh store" at the bottom?

@simple_mama - WP-Admin > Account > Your Account - says I am 'successfully logged in to Pagelines' and 'Developer Edition is enabled'. I also tried the [Refresh] button but it did nothing... well, it refreshed the page but back to the same state! : )

If an update was made, I'm not sure if it's live yet. I just installed Profiles for the first time and my version is the same as yours (1.0.6).

huh hahaha... yes, I'm sure "CSS is the solution". I will put the right next to my other wish lists. "Putting an end to world hunger", "Staying over night on the moon" and "Driving a Ferrari" and I have many more... :)

...I'm afraid CSS has to wait its turn. We have to solve world hunger, find a spare space shuttle (that still works), and befriend a wealthy person with a good taste in cars!! :)

I wanted to use the profile section to advertise my charities 4 'sponsors'. I don't want to create new wp users! Is there any way around this? This is the current page that I thought would look good with the profile layout is http://www.hibbslupustrust.org/supporters/ Cheers. John

To clarify: A way around what, exactly? Are you trying to accomplish the exact look cybersphere wants in the the profile section?

Hi John, Your site you mentioned in your post above and Pagelines own 'People page' (http://www.pagelines.com/about) are indeed created with add-on 'Profile' (purchased separately to Pageline Framework 2.0) and NO, anyone you want to list on such page MUST BE created as 'Users' in WordPress. I can see how this can be a useful feature for clubs or other organisations with lots of users (especially if they all need to be setup as a 'author' or 'contributor' on your site anyway). However, for you and I, when all we want is staff directory (with people who will never touch the WP Admin screen), you will only want 'Profile' IF you like the format/look. Otherwise, there seem to be other ways to list people on a page with thumbnail photo. I was initially trying to do my staff directory using 'Banner' function. See http://www.pagelines.com/forum/discussion/15665/fine-tuning-pagelines-banners-display-shorten-banner-039post-types-order039-plugin-not-working.#Item_8 Rangelone suggested another method using a plug-in called, 'Special Recent Post. Hi John, I think in your case, you would be better off using the Boxes section rather than the Profiles section in my opinion. http://www.pagelines.com/wiki/index.php?title=How_to_Use_the_Boxes_Section

I would like to add the box shadow around my profile sections, however when I type the following css(see below) I will get the shadow effect like it shows in the about us sections on the pagelines.com website. The only problem is, that css code will post a shadow on all grid elements like "BOXES". HOW DO I ONLY MAKE THE SHADOW APPEAR ON THE PROFILE SECTIONS? .grid-element-pad { -webkit-box-shadow: 0px 0px 0px #000; -moz-box-shadow: 0px 0px 0px #000; box-shadow: 0px 2px 5px #aaa;}
