Setting Up My Site

Recommended Posts

dean

I just purchased WhiteHousePro and I'm slowly learning my way around. Most of my design experience has been in Dreamweaver 3 but I can get around a bit in code. I'm also new to Wordpress. Would you care to get me started off on the right foot? I want to set the site up for music, short-stories, poems and an occasional daily blog. I understand the blog but I want to make sure I use the proper pages for poems and short stories. I may have 30 or 40 of each--maybe more. I want the search and hierarchy to be easy. What is the best way to structure WHP for this type of content? I've been experimenting with it offline a bit here: http://www.deanhall.com/wordpress/ Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Would love too....

First step, IMO, is to stop using Dreamweaver and move to a solid text editor and install a local server (MAMP for mac, WAMP for windows, etc..). Edit code in the editor and preview in your browser.

There is no 'set' way to structure content. This is one of the challenges of web architecture. Every project is different. There are plugins for almost anything you can imaging though. I might organize each poem/story as a post on the blog and categorize and tag them accurately. The one key piece advice I have is this: You're site can't be simple enough; but it can easily become to complex.

Thanks, Andrew. WHP is great! I'm getting around pretty well for a newbee. I'll take your advice--I really want it simple. Before I was experimenting with putting the poems and stories on separate pages. What advantage, if any, would putting them on a blog give me over a page? I think this might be settle everything and I can get started. Regards, dh

With blog postings you can categorize like poems and order them chronologically down a page as well. You can also have people comment on it when it is part of the blog
