Lost section control on my blog page after upgrading to 1.5.3

Recommended Posts

my blog page had sections from the default template. After upgrading to 1.5.3 I no longer have the section control. Under Pageline sections I get "Individual page settings do not work on the blog page (use the settings panel)." Plus I can't get one of my sidebar widget placement to work. When I reactivate version 1.1.5 I get section control back, and my widgets work fine. Stuck with 1.1.5, can anyone help. Thanks

Platform Pro - theme framework, not Platform Pro base.

Do you have PlatformBase deactivated? Try activating it (but leaving PlatformPro 1.5.3 installed). PlatformBase is meant to be edited to customize PlatformPro. If you don't have it, you can download it from your Launchpad account.

Don't have it installed at all. I may be a bit confused. If you are referring to the themes, I only have PlatformPro 1.5.3 as my activated theme. Are you saying I need to download and install PlatformPro Base? and activate that. Sorry if I am missing something.

I wasn't clear enough. :) PlatformBase is the child theme for PlatformPro (the parent theme). PlatformBase is based on PlatformPro, so it's pretty much the same theme, but PlatformBase is the theme you use to make customizations in the files so that the parent theme's files aren't messed with.

OK, almost there....! lol So effectively I could export my settings that I have been using and customizing for the past year. download PlatformBase. Deactivate PlatformPro, and then activate PlatformBase, upload my exported settings and then go from there?

Hi Lomorris, Yes, you may have to reset your navigation menu, but this would be simply saving the theme location, which would be a two second job. I've posted a link to the docs, which explains what a child theme is. http://www.pagelines.com/docs/base-child-theme I would also recommend saving any custom css you may have to a text file. This is just as a precaution.

Please search our forums, before posting!

Thanks, I successfully got the base child theme loaded. I'll get back to trying to determine what my issue is. I'll post again if I don't get my issue worked out.

Your section control may appear once you start a post and WP does the initial save, creating the permalink. You would see this above the editing panel where WP provides you with the link (URL) of your post. Additionally, you can also look top right on the post or page editing screen for a grey tab that says "Screen Options" which has a down arrow. Click the tab and a panel will drop down. Make sure Pagelines Section Control is checked. Also, if you use Excerpts check that too, along with any other editing component you want to see. Make sure too that Pagelines Meta Settings is checked. Once you're done, just click "Screen Options" once more and the panel will vanish, but those settings will remain constant each time you open a post

Thanks to all that responded, and thank you rangelone for my lesson, that really helped. What I have learned is my issue was not the blog page or the actual post and missing section control. After some digging in, my real issue was a plugin that I am using that checks for the existence of an image in the post and it if determines there is an image, it will automatically place the image in the post nice and pretty (note the image gets into the post via the plugin's little UI that allows me to insert the image while creating or editing the post. In Platform Pro 1.1.5 all worked well when I had a box set on the post. After upgrading to 1.5.3 what happens now is the when the box set exist in the post page which I set up as default using the template, the plugin will also place the image right in the box set as well as the post. So now the box shows the thumbnail, my text and the image. The box set should only show with its thumbnail my box text minus the image. The image is supposed to only show in post content. I can only assume that as part of the upgrade there were some code changes in the loop. Temporarily I have removed the box set from the template until I can figure out where the code change has taken place.

You may want to look at the plugin's page at www.wordpress.org/extend/plugins. If it dates back to PlatformPro .1.1.5, then it may have expired or may be incompatible with Wordpress 3.2.1. The upgrade to Platform 1.5.3 might simply have updated the theme to be fully compatible with WP 3.2.1, thus creating a conflict when the plugin tries to process using the older version. Sometimes these things get very convoluted with one thing affecting ten others in areas you'd never expect in a million years. Just last night I was dealing with a website in which a plugin that managed widgets was stopping the feature slider (not a widget) from displaying Youtube, as well as making each slide show the same background. We couldn't even delete the darn things or add new ones. It's critically important to make sure that plugins are up to date. Personally, I do a standard check every 2 weeks because many plugin developers are amateur coders and I'm sorry to sound ageist, but kids. They move on to different things, rather than operating for the long term. The plugin check I do makes sure others haven't cited it as broken and that it is compatible with the latest WP version.
