Block Editing Page main Content

Recommended Posts

bizint

Hi ....I'm looking to create nice blocks of content in the main page content area, abit like this: http://www.morganlovell.co.uk/about-us/ Trouble is, its not easy doing stuff like this - abit like creating a table.... I think I need something like this: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/multiple-content-blocks/ - but also to get this working they're talking about tweaking php - which strikes the fear of god in me..thats sounds hard. Does anyone understand what I'm trying to do...is there an easy way....and I suppose if this is what I have to do...any hints tips? Many thanks, james

Have you looked at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/divup-content/ which uses shortcodes. James, tables are another option and candidly, they work, provided you are good with CSS or patient enough to try it. I recommend them because you have so much flexibility. One suggestion, style the tables at the table not in CSS Rules or stylesheets. Why? Because you may want to use tables elsewhere and the CSS will be site-wide, while specific table styling at the table proper will be unique to that table.

interesting....putting tables in....is that best done with a something like tinyMCE plug-in? Which puts the table editor into the wyswig bars above the content area?

Another option would be a columns shortcode plugin like: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/easy-columns/ Haven't tried it but tried others like it. Basically what you have there is splitting your content into 2,3, or 4 columns so you can have a nice grid layout.

My main concern with tables - is I've never seen a good result. It always seem to jumble all over the place.....this is why I find tables rubbish...god know how this happened... http://www.businessinteriors.co.uk/betatest/wordpress/knowledge/

Have you considered using your Custom Page in the Template Setup? Click and drag the Soapboxes section over and then the Boxes Section over. Once it's saved, create two Soap Boxes and create a category for them. Then, create as many Boxes as you need and create a category for them. Go back in to edit your page and on the right hand side select the Custom Page as your template. Then in the meta data, select the Soap Box and Box categories you created so that they'll appear on your page. I'll create an example and send you the link.

Here's a sample. No sidebar but it can be a nice layout: http://quantumpolitics.org/sample-soap-box-and-box-page/ Enjoy your sleep.

Hi Michael, that's pretty brilliant....but - I do always have a sub menu widget in a side bar next to the content ...I'm just abit worried that your layout cannot be with a siderbar left...could be wrong, will have a play... For example the banners are ideal too...but they cant go into the page content area ...I need all this stuff directly to the right of the sub menus...mmm If your layout can squeeze a sidebar along the left of it....it works!

Mmmm yes Michael.....its working fine as yours, but there is a serious limitation: http://www.businessinteriors.co.uk/betatest/wordpress/testing-testing/ Unfortunately the brilliant banner and box section cannot have a sidebar to the left of it....in fact, this is a real shame all round. I have found a widget that allows me to put posts into a page content area like here (called associated posts which costs 30usd and is also money to keep updated!), see working here: http://www.businessinteriors.co.uk/betatest/wordpress/knowledge/news-blog/office-fit-out-and-refurbishment-news/ As you can see this is the basics of allowing me what I want to do....but I cant believe this is the only solution...(and paid at that!). What I want to do...which is create neat blocks of content in a page content area.... doesn't seem like a "nice to have" tweal - more like a fundamental requirement for any nicely laid out and designed website....take a look at these two websites here: http://360.steelcase.com/white-papers/ http://www.morganlovell.co.uk/about-us/credentials/ Both have a navigation and "sidebar area" to the left.....whilst the main content area has a post style, box style or banner style layout organising the main page content.....it seems to me a must have? Again any points to achieve this if I'm missing something would be much obliged!
