Styling Recent Posts on Homepage and Sidebar Thumbnails

Recommended Posts

I have a diagram showing what I am trying to achieve on the home page of my current project: http://outdooraddixtions.com/images/home_diagram.jpg I want this to be dynamic so that each time a new video post is loaded the most recent 'episode' will be featured on the home page and the 5 most recent episodes will be featured in the sidebar. I used the TPG GET POSTS plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tpg-get-posts/) on my last site to get recent post excerpts on the home page. However, it does not handle thumbnails/images at all. I am looking for a plugin that can help me accomplish this or maybe RSS code if that would work (although I am not familiar at all with how to implement that). All videos are being pulled from YouTube and the concept is not too different than a YouTube home page with feature video and sidebar. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! There isn't much there yet but the site is visible at www.outdooraddixtions.com/home A big THANK YOU in advance!!!

Also, if it would be easier to do this with a different layout I am up for trying that. For example, full-width video with recent videos below. I just need the general concept to work. Thanks!

Hi. You should make a static image of each video and add it as the Feature Image for each post. A plugin called Special Recent Posts http://www.lucagrandicelli.com/special-recent-posts-plugin-for-wordpress/ works great. I'd suggest the incredibly inexpensive paid version, but the free one is fantastic too. I use it on my site to place a list of articles (with thumbs) in the sidebar. It can also be posted to the main body. This is not quite the same as the TPG Get Posts I suggested to you earlier and has a different purpose. Essentially, this would do precisely what you are suggesting in the image you linked above. But, it won't work with videos, to my knowledge. It will with the Feature Image if it's a static one as it uses the GD Libraries to manipulate the size of the image. Try to make your images square if you can.

Okay, I am going to play with that plugin today. I'll let you know how it goes. It looks like it will be a very helpful tool. Thank you!

AWESOME!!! Long way to go on the site but this was one of the key elements I needed to figure out. Works like a charm. Thanks so much for your help, once again!

No prob. As you find a need to do things that are outside the normal scope of Wordpress, you may wish to reference that need via http://www.wordpress.org/extend/plugins where you can find thousands of great plugins. Just make sure they're compatible to WP 3.2.1 or higher and aren't cited as broken.
