Global Content Width won't accept inputs

Recommended Posts

slingr

On a new installation of Platform Pro Dev, 1.5.3; Platform Pro | Layout Editor ... I'm trying to adjust the Global Content Width to 1000 from the default 960. When I click in the box below the column width slider, I can highlight the "960" but I can't change it. Nor can I change the numbers in the Main Content and Sidebar boxs. All I can do to adjust width settings is move the slider within the overall width of 960. Is there something non-intuitive I have to do to adjust the global width settings?

What is happening when you try to change the numbers? Do they revert back to what they were before?

They don't do anything. I can highlight the numbers in the box (960, 640, or 320) but I can't change delete the value, I can't change the number of the values, nothing. This occurs with both Win 7 and Mac OS.

Have you already tried deactivating your plugins? Did you upgrade recently (either the theme or WordPress or both)?

No, like I said ... it's a new install, WP 3.2.1, PP 1.5.3 Developer. I can create a user role for you if you want to look at it yourself if you can tell me how to get you the information. I just checked on two other sites that I made using PP with the 960 width and they do the same thing ... I cannot edit the widths using the boxes below the dynamic width slider. I can grab and drag the slider to adjust the widths, but I cannot change the overall width.

Slingr, that's designed that way as a protection. It prevents people from typing in a number that may exceed the reasonable width of the site and keeps the limits. The method, as you doubtlessly know, is to slide the width in the area above to 1000. You must understand too, there's a risk in an entry field that someone could accidentally add a number like 9000 and not notice this. That would cause all sorts of problems. By blocking entry, we avoid so many potential problems. The slider works.

As a matter of fact, rangelone, no, I didn't doubtlessly know that the slider expanded beyond the 960. Otherwise I wouldn't have asked the question. May I constructively criticize the UI on this because you've created a box that the user can click instead of that makes it look like the user should be able to make an input? There are so many ways this could have been implemented and it looks to me like you chose the most confusing. And couldn't the text above it be a little more helpful, rather than just saying "Configure ..."? Configure, how? Grag and drag the outside and inside borders. And IGNORE the extraneous values below the slider because they add no information that's not already inside the slider and only cause confusion. Those boxes and the values inside are completely unnecessary.

Well, I just lost a long response because before I posted the comment, I ACCEPTED the answer. Whatever.

Again, I understand your confusion and frustration and I guess I was actually trying to compliment your knowledge of PlatformPro, not to insult you in any way. Sorry if you took it that way. However, to politely correct you, I am a user and a forum moderator, not a developer, so accusing me of doing this wrong is to say the least, way off base. Version 2.0 is in development and I don't know how this will be handled in the next version. I'll bring your point up to the developers as I actually see there's some validity to explaining that component much better.

Have you tried changing the sections independently to achieve 1000px? (i.e. make the content and sidebar equal 1000px).
