Where to insert code for a custom slider

I have a piece of php code for a custom slider which was built via a plugin. The slider is the width of the content area and I want to place it above the content area on the homepage while keeping the sidebar intact. Can someone tell which file I need to edit and roughly where to place the code? Thanks
