The sidebar is not edited. You add widgets to the sidebar. Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets. Select the sidebar you have on your site and open it (down arrow next to the name of the sidebar). Grab a widget that you want and drag it over. It will open asking what you want to call it and providing any settings, if there are any. Save the settings or anything else you changed. Then go look at your site. The sidebar will have that widget present. For custom code, images, or text blurbs, use the Text Widget.

By default, all widgets are site wide. However, you can use a plugin called "Widget Logic" to determine which pages or posts or categories your widget will appear on. So if you have something that only applies to financial matters, it may not be sensible to show that on a contact page or in a law category.
