how do i allow html in excerpts and cut them off wherever with a more tag?

hi, i am switching from genesis to pagelines for a bunch of websites. one thing is that with genesis, it just allowed me to place a more tag wherever i wanted in a post, the excerpt closed all open tags, and the excerpts looked nice. i am not sure if i used a plugin like HTML excerpts to do it, but i'd like to recover the same ability for my pagelines sites. see genesis: http://screencast.com/t/oNzKhjUdHpF http://screencast.com/t/gShrJ1d4rvpy i'd say that was pretty cool, and it was quite easy to use. now i have a situation where none of those images are showing up, i don't want to switch to a convention of using "thumbnails" or "featured images" for this website because there are going to be multiple low-tech skill authors. i'll check around??¦ best, dainis w michel

I use "Auto Excerpt Everywhere" which allows me to set the length of my excerpts. Also, I use "Auto Featured Image" which grabs the first image in a post and makes it the featured image for the post, automatically. I'm not sure where those images you refer to are coming from, nor why low-tech skill authors can't add an image (if you post some guidelines and instructions). But, if you could guide me to explain the source and purpose, perhaps I can find a solution that will work. As for the rest of it, that's all plugins and I'd suggest you browse around at http://www.wordpress.org/extend/plugins for the best solution.

the functionality i have/had with genesis was essentially that the "top part" of the post would become the excerpt, so, for a category like http://www.taoofyouth.com/products/ that's literally just the top part of the post. i don't have to "do" anything to make the excerpts work that way. and maybe they are not "super neat," but they are approved by the site owner and that's the way she has her store set up for now. i am in the process of migrating my network of sites from genesis to pagelines. i am not sure if the functionality i'm talking about is "just how genesis works" but this comment may get me closer and provide a solution for those who follow: http://www.pagelines.com/forum/discussion/comment/55115#Comment_55115 another issue resolved would be the current inability to wrap text around thumbnails in pagelines (if that is still an issue).

well, i'm just noodling around with the options right now, and it looks like the "more tag" and the language tag have popped up here: http://www.latv.at/jaunumi/ cam you tell me which setting allowed that? i'd like those tags to not be visible in the activity stream best, dainis

Quite likely Buddypress, bbPress or Wordpress. Platform doesn't actually add "read me" or "..." tags to posts, comments or forum topics.

can you help resolve the issue? i haven't tested another theme, though i own genesis and genesisconnect -- but i'd like to be able to rely on pagelines and pagelines support to help me take care of these kinds of glitches.

Try the system in your language in the Buddypress default theme and in Twenty Ten, the WP default theme. I suspect this is because your posts are in a foreign language. It may simply be picking up that language's punctuation and converting it to snippets of code. Much like putting a colon, a dash and a ) makes ;-) a smiley face. I'd suggest checking the buddypress.org forums to see if anyone else has experienced this.

i'm kind of doubting you are suggesting this, but are you saying that if i have Buddypress default theme Twenty Ten in my themes folder and i set the "system language" in one or both of those other themes to Latvian (even if they are not active), that this issue would disappear in PageLines? odder settings have worked wonders in the past LOL PS: really have not had a lot of fun, luck, or even encounters with friendly folks round the BuddyPress forums. i can head over there, but i've been avoiding "that place" for a while now. still use BuddyPress but may try to figure out a way around it. PPS: what do you suggest i do if the issue disappears in buddypress default, switch themes, or will that give us more info to resolve the issue? PPPS: thanks for your analysis though, because it sure sounds reasonable n will likely help!

this topic has split into a) OP b) what's with them silly tags ...this takes us back to the OP topic: if you look at http://www.taoofyouth.com/products/ you see HTML excerpts which are cut off by a more tag. The site uses Genesis. I'd like to do the same thing in my PageLines sites and am not sure how to set it up. ps: the first post is redirecting in an odd way due to WLM, that's not really that post, but the excerpt is still not showing as desired (no stripping of anything, just cut off where i put the more tag).

Are you trying to change the "Continue Reading" link text? When I click on that link, it says, "server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete." This may be an issue related to browser cookies.

i think there's enough "noise" in this thread for it to be tough for you guys to filter out what i am trying to do. ack! it's the display of the excerpt i'm really trying to handle. basically, if i have HTML in the excerpt, a picture rt. aligned with a caption, a centered something, bold text, etc., then i want all of that to appear, properly formatted, until i put in the "read more" tag. i'm not sure how i set genesis to "do that," but it does it. somewhere on this forum, i think i read, "if you just use the read more link, then HTML will display in the excerpt," i might be wrong about that cuz well sometimes i work late :-) but i do think i read that somewhere and that there's a way to do what i'm looking for. i'm basically saying "don't remove any HTML at all from any of my excerpts." however, i think the software needs to close all open tags or whatever -- but genesis does it really well. the redirection issue i'm thinking i'll be able to resolve with the membership software crew. i'll look into the language issue. thnx for staying on top of this thread :-)

Hmmm... well, the "more" tag works off of the_content, so as long as you have selected to show full posts on the blog/posts pages, it should work that way: cutting off the content where you insert the more tag. If it doesn't, then you could look into modifying the excerpt via functions.php. I've done that before. It basically gives you the functionality of the Advanced Excerpt plugin, but stays in functions.php.

my guess is that i just have the settings set to do what's happening, for example, under Post Excerpt or Summary Handling Where should the theme use post excerpts when showing full column posts? i do not know what a "full column post" is an at least "right there" the just-in-time knowledge delivery of the documentation isn't quite complete yet. i have to check the docs or experiment to figure out what the setting means. what should my settings be? i'll be experimenting...
