chisim11 0 Report post Posted August 26, 2011 Newby here. Just purchased Platform Pro. Installed Platfrom Pro and Platform Base w/Child Theme as instructed by Video on Pagelines. The Video indicated to activate the Child Theme and no clear indication as to when exactly to activate Platform Pro. As I started to make changes on the design w/Child Theme, went ahead and activated the Platform Pro. Does that mean I am no longer in the "Child Theme". From my limited understanding any changes I make on Child theme will not get affected if/when pagelines makes updates. However, the theme can be affected if working from Platfrom Pro. I'm still not sure really the difference between the 2. I'm trying to create more of a site rather than a blogging site. How do I know which theme I'm working on? Platform Pro or Child? At what point was I supposed to activate Platfrom Pro? Sorry for long explanation. Thanks
Jenny 33 Report post Posted August 27, 2011 The theme that should be activated is PlatformBase. By activating this child theme, it pulls what it needs automatically from PlatformPro (even though it's deactivated). You can check which theme is active in your Appearance -> Theme menu. You should always (and only) use PlatformBase. ♥ Jenny :: Web designer at Simple Mama (follow me at @simplemamacom) Check out Share Me, a social sharing add-on for DMS that is super simple to set up. chisim11 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2011 Yo Simple Mama, thanks for taking the time to reply. I see what you are saying. Oops! the current theme is platform Pro. So, since I have made some tweaks in Platform Pro. Should I..... uninstall or delete Platform Pro and reinstall it so I can wipe out all I've done and start fresh with Base theme. Or can I leave it the way it is and just activate Base now? Will that create problems later? What would you suggest? I can't move forward unless I get this question answered. Thanks! chisim11 0 Report post Posted August 27, 2011 For some reason, I thought I was going to work on this and sort of preview it before it goes live on the internet but apparently it is going live. Is it because I'm using Platform Pro? Is that the reason why we should be using the Base theme? And at what point if ever, do we activate/use Platform Pro. Still not quite clear the reason for both. Appreciate your cooperation.
Jenny 33 Report post Posted August 27, 2011 It depends on where you have tweaked, I believe. If it's any of the core files (which is not recommended since they will be overwritten with upgrades), then definitely reinstall. Actually, you might as well just reinstall PlatformPro; it only takes a few seconds. :) But before you do, if you have made any changes to the theme via the admin panel, make sure you scroll to the bottom in the PlatformPro admin page and "export" your settings. That way when you activate PlatformBase, you can just import them. Hope that helps! Let me know if anything is confusing. :) I ramble sometimes. lol ♥ Jenny :: Web designer at Simple Mama (follow me at @simplemamacom) Check out Share Me, a social sharing add-on for DMS that is super simple to set up. Jenny 33 Report post Posted August 27, 2011 To answer your second post: PlatformBase only includes a minimal amount of files that most likely will never be updated, therefore you can changes the files as much as you want without worrying about them being overriden. PlatformBase pulls anything it needs from PlatformPro using PHP calls and whatnot. So PlatformPro doesn't need to be activated to be useful. :) The kind folks here at Pagelines were nice enough to provide a child theme so that way we can make changes to the PlatformBase files without having to worry about messing anything up. In summation, you don't ever activate PlatformPro. It's there, doing its job, silently. :) ♥ Jenny :: Web designer at Simple Mama (follow me at @simplemamacom) Check out Share Me, a social sharing add-on for DMS that is super simple to set up.
