Best way to set up a carousel for clients to upload pictures?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm getting pretty familiar with Pagelines but am still new to carousels. I'm trying to figure out the best way to set up carousels so when I am done setting up the site my clients can upload new pictures to different carousels in an easy way. I want to create several different carousels for different pages. There are no blog posts on my site so I'm not sure the best format. Could someone please advise me on the different options I have? Thanks

The carousel can display images from any of these three sources: NexGen gallery, Flickr, and blog posts. You can display a carousel in certain templates (in Template Setup) and/or in your pages and posts (using PageLines Meta Settings > Carousel Settings). You can choose which source the carousel set can pull images from in the PageLines Meta Settings within a page or post editor.

Thanks Catrina. Since I don't have any blog posts I understand that I can't pull from that option. I'm trying to decide between NexGen or Flickr. With the recent discussion around the outdated Flickrrss plugin I'm wondering how difficult it would be for a client (non techie) to use NexGen. OR - is the flickrAPI that I've read about an option? Also, can you categorize photos in flickr so they will upload to appropriate pages? I'm just not finding the answers to these questions as of yet - so any input would be awesome! Thanks :)

If your client chooses to use Flickr and they have a lot of photos to post, they may need to purchase a "pro" account (there's a limit to how many photos can be uploaded with a free Flickr account). I'm not familiar with a way for photos to be categorized in Flickr for the sole purpose of posting them to specific pages, however. Does your client already using Flickr?

No they are not currently using flickr. Do you think that NexGen would be easy enough for them to figure out. I'll be posting the 50+ photos for the orignial carousels but they might need to add addtional ones in the future. I would love to give them the site to maintain on their own once I'm done setting it up, although I know that might not be possible.

If they're already using Flickr, I think that should be the best option. The PageLines settings for the carousel aren't difficult to implement and the photos are going to be uploaded to Flickr, anyway (which the client already knows how to do).

This still leaves me with multiple questions. Will flickr rss do what I want it to? Will a client be able to upload photos into specific categories (never disappearing until they are deleted)? Will NexGen do the same thing and still be easy enough for them to figure out?

I'll try it out and see how it goes. Then I'll come back and leave some feedback for the future. Thanks.
