sarahp 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2011 Hi, I'm a total beginner. Your tutorials assume more knowledge than I have, but I AM learning, so bear with me... I need some help with basic concepts- just not clear on WHERE my blog-type materials will live in within the site architecture, so to speak: "Pages" automatically generate header nav buttons. For me, pages will have static info. I'm doing ok filling them with carousels and stuff. In addition to a few pages, I'd like one header nav button to take viewer to one page that is where you see new "posts". How do I do it?
Rob 547 Report post Posted August 14, 2011 New posts should appear in "the loop" or on the main page and on any category pages that are automatically created when you add categories. The nav menu you speak of is manually managed. Those automatically added menu items for each new page will not include static pages such as the ones created with new categories. However, this is much easier than it sounds. On your Wordpress Menu (left side in the Admin section), you'll see "Appearance". In that section you should find "Menus". Click that. At the top you should see a dialog box following the words "Menu Name". Type in a menu name.. something line Menu1 or Primary. Click Save Menu. To the left, a grey box headed by "Theme Locations" has a drop down box for "Primary Website Navigation". Now you should see that new menu title you just created in the drop down list. Select it and click Save in that area. Below there, in the next grey box, are "Custom Links", where you can manually add a link. Typically, this is where you'd add something like the full URL to your homepage and add the word "Home" for the Label. Once saved, it should appear in the large box on the right. Below Custom Links are Page Links, where your pages will be listed by All, Most Recent or Popular. Use All if your site's new. Select the pages you wish to appear by checking the boxes for each page you wish to see. Click Add to Menu and they will appear in that large box to the right. Below the Page Links you'll find Categories. Again, just as you did with Page Links, select the ones you want and click Add to Menu. Now in that large area, you can set the hierarchy of your menu. By this I mean that not every page or category must have its own primary menu link. Some may be subordinate. In more plain English, you might have a category for Fruit and sub-categories for Apples and Oranges. The hierarchy would be: Fruit -Apples -Oranges Save the Menu again where you first created the menu name. If Apples is a category, all posts that have been categorized to Apple will appear. Should you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask. Former PageLines Moderator, Food Expert and Raconteur
