Category as page or page as a Category

Recommended Posts

Ok heres an example of what id like to do: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/columnists/borisjohnson/ I'd like to have a page for a person or item, with a little txt about them at the top, then all their posts underneath. Obviously the person or thing is best to be a category but how then does the "home page" of that category get a little txt area about them at the top?

If the "home page" for the category (which is the category page) is going to display text at the top, you'll need to use custom code. Alternatively, you can create a custom page template and use shortcodes to add the person's posts to the page and a hook to add the text for the author info at the top (using PHP).

Please read the docs before posting. Please do not private message me unless I ask you to.

You will need to use hooks to display the text on an author page and then conditionally set the hook to only display on the page for that particular author. Check out the PageLines docs on writing hooks to get started here http://www.pagelines.com/docs/base-child-theme You can use the hook "pagelines_before_maincontent" with the condition "is_author()" and specify the author page you would like the bio to appear for.

Blimey- Tried cracking this and can't. Any chance of some custom css or atleast say what file and where i should be putting this? Are we "pulling" the text from an author page and then listing all the posts under (IE if i clicked a category) or the other way around? (IE inserting a category search on a page)?

Dear Jgbr, It's not as bad as it may seem. You have some options. First, you'll need a few plugins. Custom Press will allow you to create custom taxonomies. In plain English, you'll create a new category for each of your authors/writers. Then, a second plugin called Map Categories to Pages will let you tie pages to categories (and vice versa). Then, you simply need to create a specific page for each writer, including a photo. Here's where it get's a bit tricky and unfortunately, someone else will have to help with this. You'll need to add the category posts on that page. The way I do it is actually to list subcategories created with Custom Press. To achieve that, I use Multi-Column Taxonomy List. There should be other plugins to help you if that doesn't work for you. Or, someone could recommend a means of adding the posts to the page. You can see a demo of what I mean here: http://www.epicurus.com/Glossary/beverages

Custom Press http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-press/ Map Categories to Pages http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/map-categories-to-pages/ Multi-Column Taxonomy List http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/multi-column-taxonomy-list/ This plugin might be your solution: Display Posts Shortcode http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/display-posts-shortcode/ Add the shortcode to the page under the section with your author/writer's bio and pic.

Many thanks for all that info rangelone Ill report back on my findings and I am keen to here of other options too. I believe it to be a long standing issue of that wordpress has yet to allow the merging of both or something.

This works to some degree but requires alot of moving about of data. This however only allows a simple list of all works done by the author. IE, a list on the page and links. You could type this manually but this cuts alot of corners. If anyone else has the ideas of actually having the list look like a content area embedded into a page, im all ears.
